Just saw on Auto Motor and Sport , DW TV, Jaguar is making a station wagon. I imagine I am late getting the news but what has the world come to? Will there be a Bentley SUV next?

There's been Jag wagons before (conversion jobs on the XJS.
Aston Martin has made wagons.
The Volvo P1800 was a sweet little wagon.
Nuthin' necessarily wrong with wagons. You could argue they combine most of the utility of a SUV with the driving satisfaction of the sedan they're built on.
Problem is, here in america we associate wagons with flaccid piles of junk Detroit foisted off on us for so many years.
Then again, the Nomad was a mighty cool wagon back in it's day.

Baxter, I think your observation of the Nomad was astute. The innovation (sometimes) of Detroit makes a great car. Also (despite maintaining varnished wood) the old woodies, were, and are, beautiful designes on wheels. It will be interesting to see what Coventry comes up with. Lets hope it is a retro design on wood (burled mahogany)!!

PS. The Jag station wagon should properly be called a "shooting brake" ala RollsRoyce/Bentley.

Nothing against wagons. Love the P1800 and old woodies are an all time favorite - but Jaguar

I saw this advertised in the UK when I was there at the end of January.......the wagon is based on the X-Type (unless they are planning something else for the USA) which does rather make it more palatable. In fact, Jaguar did produce two (I believe) estate cars (more refined than "wagon") based on the MkII, which were used as support cars for competition events. So there is a precedent for a Jaguar estate car using the smaller production saloon as a base.

And don't forget one of my favourite British wagons, the very handsome Aston Martin DB5 & DB6 Shooting Brake's.

Actually saw an X-Type wagon here in town this past week, doesn't look all that bad... having said that I've never been a huge fan of the X-Type in the first class.

Bear in mind that I'm afflicted with a station wagon loving gene, I'll coveniently blame my dad for this (having owned them for all my growing up years), if it's a station wagon (er... estate car in British speak) it's got my attention.

THe Rover P6 and Jags had an estate, albeit from an outside source, Reliant Scimitar, Volvo P1800, Aston Martin..........Nothing wrong with a wagon.....More functionality........It beats an land barge......er excuse me SUV..............JUst do the job right and don,t lose any of the sportiness.............If any of you watch the British Saloon Cars you will recall in the late 90,s Rickard Rydell drove a Volvo staion wagon (can,t recall the model) in it too great applause by the crowds......They loved see him wheel this by half the field...Don,t think he ever won though....
I applaud Jags effort to go outside the norm (for them)

For those off you that haven't seen it yet, here are a few pictures:

Side view is rather attractive I think....

I'm not so sure about the rear. Not bad in itself, but nothing to identify it as a Jaguar...

I think it's unfair to compare it to the classic Jaguar range. It's obviously aimed at a new customer, that would otherwise buy a BMW 3 series, Audi A4, etc. So it's less of a Jaguar then an XJ6 imho, but supposing I'd had to drive an estate for practical reasons, this would certainly be on my shortlist.

"I think it's unfair to compare it to the classic Jaguar range."

My original point I was trying to make (partly tongue in cheek) was that Jaguar had always been sort of a special car and I just thought that a station wagon just wasn't what Jaguar was all about. Much like, as I said earlier, a Bentley SUV or an Austin Healey 3000 station wagon or an MG TD station wagon. I think wagaons are great. Love them,. Had many.

It's obviously a point worth discussing, witness all the responses to your point!
Personally I associate certain car manufacturers(Volvo in particular) with station wagons, others not so much. I think the photos of the Jag look very handsome, and I suppose they want what a marketing type would call a "line extension" but I'm not sure this is the right thing to do.
I also think Porsche should leave SUVs to someone else, even if they are profitable!
Simon.

OK let Jag make a wagon but please no XKE or XK120 wagons. Please.

Now, they took what is probably the most beautiful car ever put on this earth and turned it into something ugly like that. No longer a proper E-Type, and certainly not a functional hearse, I can see no reason for it. Even wanting to be "different" isn't a good enough reason for that. I know, it's his car, he can do what he likes with it, but please!!

Okay, rant over, I feel better now.

That's not an estate, it is a Hearse!

I could not agree more.
