replacing window rubber and felt in door

Offline
Many years ago I rebuilt the doors in my '70 midget. It was a bit of a hassle, but needed to be done. So, I'm looking at this project midget in my garage and wondering if I should replace the window rubber in it (it needs to be done, but I'm wondering if I should leave that job for the next owner). It has the reinforcement bars in the door... do those make the job harder?

It is a bit of a pain, but, not too too terrible. i made a tool with a V shaped bottom to hold the clips that then protruded out the top - through the glass slot. I put the clips in the tool, and then pulled them into place from above rather than pushing from below - made the job much easier.

I've done the same as JP. The tool is a necessity. Recently a factory tool for this job was on E-bay. Pretty much identical to the one I made except it was magnetized to hold the clip's. I used a little tape to hold mine. Don't replace the vent window rubber if you can avoid it. The rubber's I got had to be modified to work and are already showing sign's of deterioration.

Trevor,
I have 2 Vent windows with good rubber on them if needed. Yours for a good price. Taking up shelf space.

Thanks, but I think the vent window rubbers are good. It is the bit under the vent window and the rubber/felt in the door glass aperture. I remember getting all that back in place took some doing and I'm wondering how difficult it is going to be with those intrusion bars in there.

Hi Trevor,
I did the ones on my '74 a couple weeks ago. Not the most fun. I did the out side rubber one first. For that I installed the clips onto the door first and while holding them up with the tool I pushed the rubber seal down into the clips. For the felt I started with the clips on the felt strip and pulled them up onto the door.
The first door took forever until I figured after many trial and error attempts. The second door went much better but still not a joy to do.

I have only done it with the bars - so, don't really have a point of comparison. I think as long as you have 10 inch fingers, you will be fine! Seriously, it is awkward regardless, but, if they are deteriorated, I suspect for the sake of a couple of hours work (at most) you will kick yourself if you don't do it correctly.
