Mineral spirits comes to mind.

Also WD-40. No, really! Worked for me.
 
Dang, that was FAST Mickey! Thanks for the suggestions, can't believe I didn't try WD-40. I'll give the mineral spirits a try if that doesn't work. Thanks for the tips.

I've always used mineral spirits.
 
I just wanted to let everyone know the results of using mineral spirits/WD40 to remove old road tar from a painted surface - it works like gangbusters! I ended up using the mineral spirits fist, applying it with an old brush. I used the same brush to lightly scrub off the majority of the road tar then followed with WD 40 to remove the last of the stuff. Again, worked great!
Thank you all for your help with this, the end result made me look like a hero to the missus and I need all those opportunities I can get!

An embarrassingly long time - over a year. :blush:
It does show how well this process works though so thought it was more important to report the results than worry about any embarrassment.

Sort of going off on a tangent, I have a car with base coat/ clear coat. It doesn't usually set outside but last year one day a bird dropped its load on the car. By the time I noticed it had dried.

I washed it off with a stream of water to avoid scratching. There was a distorted area so I used wax, then polish, then machine buffing compound. I can still see distortion. The base coat is black, so just about anything shows up.

Any suggestions?

What product, pad, machine, etc did you try? Can you get a closeup pic of the damage?

Bird bombs vary in severity, anything from minor to unrepairable. Often, even if it's too severe to fix completely, it can be reduced to where it's far less noticeable.

With microfiber towels I tried Eagle 1 Nanowax, thenMeguiar's Swirl X, and finally some machine buffing compound. Everything was rubbed by hand, no polisher. (I'm not sure this image will paste. If not I'll try pming you. [img:left]J:\DCIM\100OLYMP\P1012960[/img]

Try going to the "Full Reply Screen" and click on the "File Manager" link below the lower left corner of the text window.
It will allow you to post a picture the is on your computer.
Other will suggest posting the picture on one of the online pictures sites. That works also, but I have not done it.
