Just thought I'd share a little photojournalism project I worked on last Saturday (also check out my signature for the week) in the week leading up to Remembrance Day [British Commonwealth ceromonies]

I just went downtown and took street portraits of people wearing their poppies (for those who aren't aware of the symbolism of the poppy... www.canoe.ca/RemembranceDay/poppy.html )

Here's a sampling of what I've posted so far, more to come over the rest of the week...

Oh yeah, I'm loving the new Nikon D70s, what a great camera! Kicks butt on the old Lumix... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

It's good to see young people recognizing those folks.

Great project, Sherlock.

Thanks Rick and Steve,

Just my attempt at being a freelance photojournalist /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Still not claiming perfection...

Remember - while those poppies initially were meant to remind folks of the horrors & losses of WWI - on Veterans'/Remembrance Day we need to remember all our war heroes - from every conflict in both our nations' histories!

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif I seem to remember that the first poppies were made by returned soldiers etc.,Earl Haig Fund I think it is called. This was also a fund raiser, and a reminder.Maybe some one can verify this?

I think it will be hard this year because of the losses in Iraq and Afghanistan

My POW-MIA flag is flyin'... I miss th' poppies. It seems they 'faded' from US tradition when the day was named "Veteran's Day"... I remember it as Armistice Day and recall the poppies. Our Granfar related the significance when I was a wee lad. Those 'lessons' tend to stick.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/canpatriot.GIF /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif ...and many others...

They should make it easier to remember...we're a Nation that has a short memory & WWI/II are too far in the distant past to mean anything to most young people...however, Iraq/Afghanistan are relevant to them as they have high school buddies serving there...

We're having a huge family T'giving at my daughter's this year....one of her 1st cousins lost a leg in Afghanistan...I'm gonna honor him...Special Forces, Bronze Star, Silver Star plus several more.....he's my hero!

Right!!!

I've recently seen some fairly informative history on PBS. Mebbe some folk need to have their TV remotes taken away from 'em after the channel's set to PBS.

What I meant tony was it will be harder on the family's and friends of those lost there as it is still fresh in our minds.

Understand....however, if its personal, it never gets lost in the recesses of one's mind - its always fresh...I still remember the names & faces of all the friends I lost in combat in Vietnam & of the soldiers under my command who died in Desert Storm...they'll never be forgotten!

In Canada we always associate Remembrance Day especially with WW1, because of the battle at Vimy Ridge in which Canadian troops finally succeeded, while suffering terrible losses, in taking a heavily defended German position. This was a defining moment in Canadian history as it shaped our view of ourselves as a nation. A remembrance service is shown on television each year, and brings tears to my eyes.
Sixty nine Canadian soldiers won Victoria Crosses in the war, almost unbelievably three were all from the same street, Pine Street in Winnipeg, which was renamed "Valour Road".
In Australia there is a similar tradition surrounding Anzac Day, in April, which commemorates the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops in Gallipoli in 1915.

I visited Vimy Ridge this past spring. The place sent chills down my spine, that was some accomplishment. To see the shell holes, one upon the other, and the reverence in which the place is still held was something else. The Canadians had the most evocative memorials over there too. The one at Vimy was being re-furbished and as such was covered in tarps so we were unable to view it, but I do have photos of another that I took in Belgium, just outside of Ypres. If anyone's interested, I could maybe get Basil to post it?

Something that I learned early on was that Canada has always been there for Britain, declaring war against Germany in both world wars on the same day as Britain did. You don't get a more loyal friend than that.

Not that I am devaluing what the United States has done in the common cause, but Canada was always there from day one.

That, coming from you Tony, is a compliment indeed! Tell him thanks from an old Brit, would you?

Absolutely Interested, if not posted, please PM for an email, I'd love to see them, I have a fair few too.
Did you go to Tyne Cot, Paschendale, Lochnagar crater?

The cemetaries run by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission are impeccable, so too is that at Omaha Beach, very well kept and a great deal of respect given. I did not see one man without a lump in his throat and tear in an eye at Omaha, very moving.

It's one place in France where the people haven't forgotten what other nations did in those terrible June days.

Pity the rest of 'em haven't the same understanding... mebbe there'd be a bit less 'attitude' and argie today.

I will always remember and never forget.

Many of those with whom I served are combat veterans. Some have made the ultimate sacrifice.

During the first Gulf War, I was a young National Guardsman assigned to protect the southern flank of Grand Rapids, Michigan. My unit was never activated. However, the units of many friends were. In addition, I got to know some fine people when I was in ROTC. While I chose not to continue down that path, many friends did and are now senior captains and majors in the United States Army. These are fine, bright, highly intelligent and highly motivated individuals, all of whom deserve our highest respect.

We often think of the aging WWI (not many), WWII, Korean War and Vietnam vets- and we should, but we have a whole new generation of vets to whom we owe a debt of gratitude.

Thank you.
