Rear brake drum paint

I'm going to paint my BJ7 rear brake drums black to show of the chrome wire wheels more. I have however seen in pictures that others have used silver paint used as well. I know ultimately it's personal preference but what are others using? Also should I be using a flat black or semi gloss rust paint?

Thanks

DT

Hi Money Pit, I use a silver paint. However, I suggest that you use a high temperature engine paint in the color of your choice.-Keoke

Moss sells a brake drum paint I think. I also believe they came from the factory painted silver.

The original silver matched the painted wires. Black would set off chrome wires nicely. As Keoke says the engine / caliper paints are rated fairly high for temperature. I would consider gloss or semi gloss. They'll get dirty anyway.

Hi Money Pit,

I used 2 part epoxy caliper paint, silver. (got it from Moss)I used it on the front calipers and the rear drums. It is a brush on paint. Actually very easy to do, and no masking off and overspray as with a spray can.

Reason for epoxy paint? Because it can stand up to heat and cleaning the wheels once in a while with a light acid wheel cleaner.

Consider how much work it is to clean all those spokes.
Very easy clean now. Spray the wheels with a garden hose, spray with acid wheel cleaner, wait one minute, rinse with the garden hose, and dry off.

My wheels are chrome with stainless spokes.
Not sure I would use acid with painted spokes, unless power coat painted.

Good luck with your decision.

Roger, Several reports indicate that the preferred Acid Type chrome wire wheel cleaner will damage Powder coated drums and wheels. However, I use it on my SS Wheels with rattle can painted drums and calipers without problems.--Fwiw--Keoke

Good to know Keoke.
I too have SS wheels and used the epoxy paint.
I use a light acid cleaner, no problems so far.
Trust this information will help those looking for help here.
Cheers, Roger
