Quarter light removal

Hi
'67 BJ8. I've disassembled the door and component parts for derusting/cleaning and replacement of rubber seals etc. However, I can't see how to get the quarter light glass surround out as the rubbers are perished. There is what is called the"quarter light pivot pin" at the bottom which is a threaded rod with a nut/washer/ spring held in a bracket. I got these off but there is a retaining collar holding the pin in place. This appears to be fixed as one piece and I can't see how to get it off. The top of the pivot pin (original)appears to be welded to the chromed metal surround. I've taken off the upper pivot.

Can anyone help? I don't want to destroy anything.

If you remove the interior door panel, you will see how it is attached. If I remember correctly, there is a hole in the door structure that you can access the tensioner (spring) or you can take out the whole assembly. If you have access to a Moss catalog, there is a diagram showing the bits. I would suggest taking it all apart. It was easier to see what is going on.

You are right so far, the collar is just being stubborn and will need some force as its a tight clearance fit.
The other thing to note is that the nut that you took off the bottom of the 'T' piece are handed one a left thread, and the other side a right thread, I found out the hard way!

Thanks for the replies. The quarter light and its frame/window channel are off. Glad to know that the collar will come off ?with vice grips. I'll try tomorrow - I've been priming and seam sealing the inside of the frame today.

Just as a follow up. I phoned one of the usual suppliers today. Replacement pivot pins are available cheaply and he said the originals are fastened in with small screws or pop rivets (he got one out of stores to check).

So all is not lost if it snaps.

Hi Tony,

Just a word of caution, the spacer is made of pot metal, and won't take heat. I melted one of mine when it was stuck and had to make another. It isn't a simple spacer either, but the hole is more of a slot and keys to the shaft to keep it from rotating. Use lots of penetrating oil, maybe a little heat, and tons of patience and it will come off....

Hope this helps.
