Putting TR-4A back on the road

Howdy,
Ray James here, from College Station, Texas. I bought a 1966-67 TR-4A from a junkyard some 30 years ago. It had sat open for many years in the weather, so was cosmetically a mess. I did some paint and body work, patched up the electrical and hydraulic systems, overhauled the carbs, replaced the fuel tank, added a tonneau and used it as a daily driver for 4-5 years when I was between ā€œrealā€ cars.
you’ll notice from the list of things I replaced/repaired, that I was driving it without an interior or top, year-round, so when I was able to buy another ā€œrealā€ car, I parked the Triumph. That was about 2003-4. It has been parked in my garage since then.
I retired in 2017, and with more time (and money) to work on it, I have finally determined to resume my resurrection of the car. After a few weeks of struggling with fuel and spark, I have the engine running , and am adjusting the HS-6 carbs. But I can’t get the idle down. With the throttle plates practically closed (I think) it still idles 1300-1500 RPM or so. I can retard the timing to get the idle down, but that seems to make it unstable and it runs on and backfires when I kill the ignition. High idle stops are clear of the cams, and low idle screws are just touching the stops. I think i must not have timing right and will look more closely at that. It has a new Crane (XR700?) electronic ignition, replacing the one I put in many years ago.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to reading about your cars/experiences here. When I was driving this car (early 2000s) I read some kind of daily email forum (lbc forum, or something like that). I wonder if that perhaps morphed into this group?

Happy new year,
Ray

welocme - sounds like a great project!

Yes, welcome, Ray!

Glad you were able to hang on to the TR4; they are great cars. And it sounds like you've got a good project for retirement.

And even though I'm an LSU fan.... GIG' EM, AGGIES! (Except when we play... šŸ˜‰ )
