Pulling or lifting ? on engine and tranny 1958

Hi
Trying the floor jack method
I have made all the disconnects but engine still not free to lift so i missed something
Motor mounts were released at body 2 bolts each
propeller shaft been removed
Tranny bolts at cross member are out one on each side
exhaust and carbs are off. Ground wire is off. Speed cable still attached but will take care of that.
Starter motor not been touched but cable been removed
Hydraulic line to slave disconnected
wire to gen are off. battery ground wire is off.
I think that covers it.
When using the floor jack I get about 8 inches high but the front of engine has only moved 1/2 inch. I know the springs have to unload but I am sure I got to that point and did not get another 1/2 inch
any suggestions?
Thanks
Sim

4 tranny bolts. 2 from the side on the tunnel, 2 straight up from underneath, unless someone left them out, which you will be very tempted to do when reinstalling. You also took the shift lever bits, right?

And when it goes back those two bottom tranny bolts are the first to go in.

There are also 3 bolts that hold motor mount to body. Only thought there were 2 Now motor is free
here is the problem with the floor jack method
I have slid the jack in from the front. Have 1x6x12 plank of wood on top. Start lifting the engine tranny. I can get the oil pan just a little higher than front cross member. I pull jack froward just a bit and rest pan back on cross member. Move jack back a bit and start over but jack's arm hits bottom of cross member and cannot get pan high enough to clear rack.
If I move it back more and jack the front of the engine starts to tilt down. I am looking for the magic spot
Any suggestions?
Thanks

I have slotted one Motor mount bracket (drivers side) so that you can leave both in and simply remove and replace the motor without removing them. It will fit in one bracket and follow the slot to its resting place in the other bracket. I did nothing else to this bracket for yrs, but this last yr made a little backing plate to go under the slotted place of this bracket. Lifting out by had is okay for the younger, but age and experience tells one to use the lift.

I agree with Jack, get a cherry picker. You would already have it out and it is A LOT safer! You also have a lot more control when you drop it back in not to scratch up the motor and engine compartment.

Oh, and wait for the reinstall. It is much harder than pulling the motor. You will wish for the angles that are possible with a hoist.

When you pull it with a stick it must be done in one fluid motion. Two guys on each side and one inside with a crowbar on the tranny in case it needs a lifting.

I never use a Jack under the pan.

Renting a cherry picker is the easiest, safest way to go. You will definately need one for the reinstall. Half day rentals are the best deal IMHO.

As was said at the begining of this thread, the minor agravation of removing the bonnet and then using a "cherry picker"/engine hoist will save much greater agravation when trying to do it with boards and a jack etc.!!!

Ok a cherry picker is what I will use as the floor jack just not going to work for me

If you saw the wires I would have to unplug, you do the same
I am surprised it has not burned to the ground 10 years ago

I would say that NOW is the time to address the wires if they are that bad(and avoid a fire down the line!)! See the other thread in this forum about using trailer hook-up plugs to make disconnects easier!!
