I wasn't going to work on the Tunebug tonight, but at about 8pm I was feeling restless and decided to do a little bit of work. An hour and a half later and a few more things were moved over to the "done" category!

First up was a simple install of the new velocity stacks I got from Hap. I hadn't been sure that the included bolts were the proper ones, but a but of reassurance from Hap and a few moments with my tap set to clean up the threads saw the bolts fitting properly and the velocity stacks installed. I'll be ordering the proper air filters in the next few days.

In a classic while-I'm-in-there momement I decided to hook up the rest of the wiring (and removed the cable to the starter as a precaution). Once the wires to the bonnet were reconnected it was time to put in the key and see if the lights still work. With only one misconnected wire to fix I was back in the light! I've got headlights (high and low beams), turn signals, rear running lights, and wipers.

The horn isn't working properly, so that's the next thing in line, hopefully on Thursday. With those little projects cleared away it's time for the first big one -- bleeding the brakes and clutch. If those go well, then I'm golden. If not... send lots of positive vibes my way!

I bet you had an ear to ear grin when you snapped these pictures.
I did! It was a good thing that my first task was to disconnect the starter so that I wouldn't be tempted at all. Did feel good to be making some progress, as it's been quite a few months since my last push.

Drew, will fitting the velocity stacks require you to use a different needle for the carb? Did you have stock air filters before?

My MKIII Midget has the stock air cleaner asembly and I'm considering a less restrictive setup. Wonder if I'll need to fit different needles, or simply adjust the mixter for a richer mix?

These carbs were rebuilt by Hap for this motor (which he also built) -- and that's where the stacks came from. I'm working under the assumption that they will all work together as currently set up.

I don't have any baseline from before, as these bits are all new to the car.

EVERYTHING is pre-set. You may have to fiddle with the balance/mixture a teeny bit (but I doubt it).

GREAT, Drew!!

Oh, why I'm thinking of it, Drew K&N RU-4410 is the air filter part number, you can get them about anyhwere that sells K7N, they even got them on Ebay for sell. I get mine at Summitt Racing.

As for mixture, you have (if memory serves me right) a #3 needle with the jet about .070" down from the bridge, which should be a good starting point, it may take some fine tuning to perfect, but it should crank up and run just fine, the #3 is about the same profile as the stock AN needle, just a tad richer in later, more open throttle stages.

Thanks, Hap. Good to know about the needle and initial settings.

Hap's bein' modest. He's preset those carbs soooo near "right" ya will be able to dial 'em in with minimal effort.

Can't wait fer th' "VROOM!" post.

That's what I'm figuring, Doc.

Just a little bit longer for the Vroom... (I hope!)

Filters ordered this morning, expect I'll have them in a few days. I'm going to pick up some brake fluid this morning, and may try bleeding the clutch/brakes this weekend.
