Payen Head Gasket

Ok, go ahead and laugh, but which side goes up with the Payen head gasket on my 66 BJ8? I believe the proper side up is the copper side, but there is no imprint confirming that. The other side is a light composite. Thanks.

Perfectly? Nothing is perfect, but I did try on the gasket both ways, thinking that there must be only one correct way, and it seemed to fit both ways.

This type of gasket as well as the two metal sided gaskets are usually installed with the rolled over ring around the cylinders (fire ring) facing down, against the block. The solid non ring side toward the head. In your case, copper side up. There "might" be exceptions but I am not aware of any.

I'm surprised that a "real" Payen gasket is not marked.

Ok, problem solved. Roger was right. It only fits one way. I think I tried it on the first time before installing the studs. With them in, the gasket misses a couple of the studs. The label on the packaging says Payen, but the gasket is definitely not stamped to indicate which side is up. No need, really. Thanks for the prod, Roger.

Hi, I have an original payen head gasket for 1300 flat , but it only says made in england on one side, no TOP ? can anyone tell me which way is up please , there is a difference around the rings, one side they are complete metal rings and the other they have a smooth part between chambers ,
