Paddy's Pedal

It's been a fun week on the "Spridget Project"...several little items that needed doing and turned out to be a lot of fun.

First thing was to complete the rerouting of the filler pipe between the rear cowl mounted Enots "flip" filler cap and the fuel cell, then plug the old filler hole between the boot lid and tail light. Last thing was to start cleaning up the front cowl so I can begin working on the tilting front clip.

In between though was a little project that I really enjoyed, installing a Paddy Hopkirk accelerator pedal on the '62 Sprite. You probably already know about Paddy, if not, here's the Wikipedia comment:

" Patrick Barron "Paddy" Hopkirk (born Belfast, April 14, 1933) is a former rally driver from Northern Ireland. Alongside Henry Liddon he won the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally in a Mini Cooper S, registration number 33 EJB. They remain the only all British crew to have won the event.

He was elected as a life member of the British Racing Drivers' Club in 1967, and is also president of the Historic Rally Car Register, and a patron of disability charity WheelPower."

Paddy is said to have come up with several inovations related to racing, one being a pedal that allowed for easier "heel/toe" control. A repro is available on Ebay and also through Moss for the MGA and MGB.

I thought the alloy pedal would compliment nicely the aluminum Tilton brake and clutch pedals that I had recently installed, so I fabricated a new mounting bracket for it. I also had to reconfigure the accelerator pedal linkage rod, moving the rod with the cable hook inboard to clear the pan I made to carry the pedal box.

Detailed photos of the installation are at:

Here's a view of the installation.

A really fun 1 day project.
