Opinions on this muffler?

It's looking like I may be replacing my exhaust. The size and price are right for this muffler.

My biggest concern with this muffler is that it may be too quiet. I don't want loud, but I think a little noise helps keep me safer. I would love to put a harley muffler on my car... but providence has not brought me one.

Morris,

Why not go over to your local Harley Dealer and ask about their Cast Offs. I and several others on this list did just that and got a Harley Muffler for free or almost free from the junk pile. I can recommend a Harley bullet shaped muffler, around 19" long,as providing a great sound, not too loud as far as I'm concered. Baffles were previously punched out but sound running 4 cylinders through this vs. 1 is great. It fits right in place along with a couple of adapters to get it to the right sized pipe and sticks out just enough to fumes aren't sucked back into the cockpit.

Do not go with bullet shape that goes to like a 4" pipe. Those makde Bugsy sound like a Rice Rocket or a big fart when you wound it out. You want the one that tapers back down.

I used a flex muffler hanger and a big U that goes all around the muffler to hang it. I did tack weld the pipe adapters together as no matter how tight I made them they worked apart. If you don't have a welder, $20 and 5 minutes at the local muffler shop will get them tack welded.

Search on Harley Muffler hear and you'll see pics. I know I've posted pics of Bugsy on here several times. Kelly will also chime in as he's running a Harley muffler. He's another member of the "We TightClub."

Morris,
I second the Harley muffler. I have a 2" pipe from my header and the muffler shop put in new pipe, swaged the Harley muffler to fit without an adapter and welded it on for about $15 IIRC. I tried the big bullet style first and it was too big so I went with a smaller Sportster muffler. I would really like to try the angle cut muffler if I can find one. I've not paid over $10 at the dealer.

I didn't remove the center plug and I like the sound. I was surprised at the different 'tones' they put out. I like the short muffler the best, but I like the looks of the angle cut muffler.

I tried one of the Angle Cut Mufflers and the way it was shaped tone was nice at low RPMs and then a sudden really loud and really obnoxious noise once you passed 3.5k RPM. If really sounded like a loud really obnoxious fart. I believe I passed that muffler on to someone on this list but I can't remember who several years ago.

Jim,
Thanks for the info and I really don't want a fart can on my BE, I just thought they looked good. What I would really like to do if put a small diameter muffler on before the rear axle and use my old dual tip PaceSetter look alike out the back.

Rut, if you still have the center in you aren't gaining anything from the header and 2" pipe. Look down the muffler at the holes before the baffle plug. You're pushing exhaust gases through TWO sets of hole of that size and quantity. There's another set just like it on the other side of the plug.

I strongly reccomend you cut the whole assembly out w/ a hole saw (1 7/8" IIRC) and drill more holes in the pipe on both sides of the plug all the way down the pipe. Stick it back in and weld it back up.

You can increase flow by 200% with little to no noise increase.

There aren't enough holes to push gases from 4 cylinders w/ twice the displacement through.

That muffler was designed for only one pulse at a time of half the volume.

I took the origional exhaust to a local Midas, I said make a complete unit up with a Cherry Bomb style muffler. They used a 2" pipe form the header and matched the needed curves mostly straight pipe. They were kind of excited to do it, came out great with a great throat for my 65. Total work $175.00.

I'm happy and looks nice.

Kellysguy,
It's (2" pipe) what came on the car and as I slowly get my BE 'act' together I'll get something that actually functions well, but for the time being it's what I've got. I do like the small Harley muffler for looks and sound.
Thanks, Rut
