Oil and tires

Just wondering what oil folks are running. I've installed an accusump to help but not sure on what to fill it with reg or synthetic.

I will need new tires after drivers school. My SCCA midget has Hoosier slicks 20x8x13. My vintage (under construction) has Yokahama 185x60x 13 80H

I might be able to run some HSR with the SCCA car. My question is what tire for what association

As always thanks for all your help. This forum has been a great help

My oil selection advice would be dependent on cam actuation. If sliding lifters and rockers then stay with a crude that has ZDDP in it, Like the Brad Penn or Yamalube oils. If rollered lifters and rockers then I would go synthetic...

Glenn--

The big issue is ZDDP level as opposed to oil type (dino or synthetic). Zinc and phosphorus levels was kicked around pretty extensively last year and you can search it in the BCF archive, but in any case for flat tappet engines you need to use an oil with relatively high ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate = Zinc and Phosphorus)levels. No one seems to know just how high is high enough but generally most "street" oils have had the levels reduced to meet EPA requirements.

In the Elva (race engine) I've been using Royal Purple R41--In the street Healeys I use Royal Purple 10W40--and in all of them I throw in a bottle of either ZDDPlus or Torco ZDP additive per change. It's like waiting for something NOT to happen but in any case I have NOT worn out any cams, which is about the most positive claim one can make!

On the Accusump--if you did not already get one consider the pressure-activated electric valve.

Slicks aren't allowed with any vintage sanctioning body and the "cheater" r-dots are only allowed with some west coasting vintage organizations.

SVRA allows any treaded DOT tire as long as it has a 60 series sidewall. Toyo RA1's, R888's, A048's , Kumho V700's and Hoosier Street TD's are popular with the 14" and 13" users. Hoosier Street TD' seem to be the most popular. What's legal for SVRA is pretty much legal anywhere else except for VSCCA.

As for oil, most of the "off road racing oils" have the proper amount of zinc in them. Vavoline VR1, Redline, Joe Gibbs, Mobil One Racing, Royal Purple, Brad Penn, and Amsoil are all popular with the flat tappet crowd. I found in researching the matter, that a lot of the flat tappet race engine builders really like Brad Penn's "break in" oil.

I would recommend Redline 10404 in the Red bottle. This is 40w synthetic and the red bottles have a lot of ZZDP/phosphorus/Zinc for flat lifter motors.

Do NOT use the blue bottles. Use magnetic drain plugs in everything. Change the filter every race weekend. Change oil every other weekend.

Do not use any oil additives except with conventional oil duing motor break in.

Use only a manual valve on your Accusump, not the electric. the electric have very low flow rates.
