noobie 1500 starting question

Not my 1500, but a friends....no seriously.
I went with him to pick it up Sunday. Seller told him it needed a starter, brand new one in box came with the car, he put it in. Charged the battery. All he gets is a click from the solenoid.
Thoughts?
I told him to short the terminals on the solenoid (hopefully that was good advice).
Just clicked.
What do you try next?
I told him to try and turn the motor over "by hand", remove plugs, put in gear and push. That should tell him if something is locked up somewhere, no?
Could still be the battery is junk. His jumper cables were MIA so he couldn't try a jump. Last I heard anyway.

Poor cables or connections, bad 'noid, bad battery, no trick monkey.

Take your pick.

This aint the one in Diamondhead, MS is it?

It is very possible that the ground wire from the engine to frame is bad.
After he has pushed it in 4th to make sure that everything moves then hook up the jumper cable from the engine to the battery ground and try it again.

Wouldn't shorting the terminals on the solenoid effectively bypass it? Since he did and it didn't turn over, the solenoid should be okay, or at least not the only problem. I'll have him go over the connections and try adding the extra ground for the engine.

Which terminals? The ones from the bat to starter or bat to key?

The plunger still can go "ckick clcick", but that doesn't mean it's making a good contact internally b/w the bat and starter cable.

I once had a Honda m.c that the 'noid was going bad. If you held the button and did a backwards kick with your heel into the 'noid, the bike would start.

Everytone thought it was soo cool.

One guy said, " Hey, it's just like Fonzie !!!"

I thought it was funny until I thought about it.......

....I'm a mechanic...who wears a black leather jacket...and rides a motorcycle........and hits things to make them work........OMG!!! :eeek: :eeek: :eeek:.....I'm "the Fonz"

I put a new 'noid on it the next day.

In that case, the contacts were good.

Sometimes you can take the noid apart and flip the contacts around and it'll work again for a while. (clean up the center one too w/ sandpaper.)

You HAVE to have a good "starting" point.

You have to have a HOT battery you KNOW FOR SURE is good !!!!

If not, you're just wasting your time trying to figure out what's wrong.

Look Chachi, if u wanna turn it loose....u gotta have da juice.....Eeeeey!!!!!

Now go down to Mr. C's hardware store and get me some sandpaper.....
