noisy fuel pump

Is there such a thing as a silent fuel pump? PO installed one of those little facet pumps and it clicks loudly and all the time. Should it make noise constantly?

Yep, if it's a Facet, cube-shape, solid-state pump, it can be very noisy. And all the time too.

But also simple, cheap and reliable.

I have one in my race car, where noise is not an issue. Very reliable.
If my street MGB needed a new pump, I'd consider one, just because I've been impressed by the Facet in my racer.....despite the noise.

For street cars, you can re-mount it on rubber mounts. This can help a lot.

Or chose one of the other type of pumps such as a Carter or even original SU pump.
If you replace it, be sure to use a low-pressure pump (less than 5 psi). Or use a higher pressure pump with a pressure regulator.

"If you replace it, be sure to use a low-pressure pump (less than 5 psi)"

Output pressure to the carburetors has to be less than 4 psi (OEM pumps put out 3.8psi).

Sound mounts can be purchased from Pegasus Auto Racing at: https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/advcat.asp?CategoryID=AIRFUEL click on Fuel Pump Accessories. When mounted on sound mounts, you can barely hear the pump, even with the engine off and the ignition on.

The Germans use rubber stand-off mounts all over their cars: Benz used 'em for air cleaner mounting, VW for Rabbit radiators, fuel pumps, lots of stuff. They're an 8mm thread but so what... once mounted they're great. Have a Facet in the MG and it's barely noticeable with the engine runnin'. Been in there since about 1991.

Yeah, I'm racing with my pressure regulator set at 3 psi.

But you have to be careful about some of the low pressure pumps too. They may also be low volume. I had a Facet low-pressure pump (3.5 psi) designed for VWs in my MGB. Wouldn't go past 70 mph.

If all else is good in the present situation, we'd probably all agree the rubber mounts is the solution.

One thing with the rubber mounts, be sure you run a ground strap from the pump body to a good ground. I used to just run a loop of wire from lower stud to body, under the mount, up to the flange on the pump where the upper stud on the mount came through.
