I'm new here. I recently retired and my wife bought me a '71 Midget. It is in very good condition, but needs a few things done to it.

Welcome, You have found a home for help with your Midget.

Welcome!

Sounds like you have a nice car and a nice wife!

It's my first British car. Well, I had a '59 Morris Minor for a while - I bought it from my brother and I didn't have my driver's license yet. He talked me into selling it to a friend of his, so I never got to drive it. I sold it for $110. It was a convertible. This was in '71 - probably about the time my Midget was made.

Actually I saw a VW convertible that I was interested in. Somehow I got mixed up on the price. I thought it was $1500, but it was really $4500, so that fell through.

We were driving along and she saw a sign in a yard for the Midget. We got it for $1700. The deal was sealed when he said he had an extra engine, transmission, alternator and a bunch of other parts.

He had recently put a Weber 2 barrel carb on it. He built the car for his wife, but she never drove it.

I don't know how to post pictures here, but here's a link to a photo of it.

The gas gauge and tach don't work and the fuel pump, which seems to be under the bulkhead makes a lot of noise. Something in the front end doesn't feel quite right, but there is no knocking like you get with bad ball joints. I have the frame only for the top. No keys for the door or trunk and only one ignition. I'm putting a Harley muffler on it as soon as I get it. I have it up on blocks right now to get it tuned up - the timing mark is under the car, you know, and to add some exhaust hangers.

Welcome

Congrats on the retire ment and the Midg. Sounds like you are off to a good start.

1 To start on With the fuel gauge make sure the tank is grounded to the body.

2. That fuel pump should be in the right rear wheel arch, it is either the OEM - pump or a solid state replacement. If it is an OE, when the key turns on it will burp a few times and stop, if ss it goes constantly, but quiets down a bit. If you replace it make sure you get a pump that is no more than three PSI (a rubber grommet between the mounting bracket and body quiets it down a bit). The SU replacements are pricey, SU can have there points cleaned, I am partial to the aftermarket ones because they are cheap and an easy swap.

3. The tach is pretty straight forward, follow a wiring diagram, I believe it goes to the coil.

4. The front end, see if there is play, top to bottom, side to side or all around on each wheel.

Please post on the spridget forum, we look forward to seeing you over there.

Hi There Darwin,

"Congrats" on your retirement & your "New/Old" car.

You really should give your wife "Hugs and Kisses" for the Great Gift she got you!

She is truly a Unique "Young Lady".

Have Fun,
