I want the good stuff, as do we all.
I'll pay for the good stuff too. Because if you don't, you'll pay over and over for the cheap stuff.
I can't find a quality period correct radiator cap for my BJ8. The correct one's have the two ears and say made in England. The first one I had, I don't remember who I purchased it through, maybe Moss, BV or BCS, was a correct reproduction. Something rusted and broke after about a year and a half. I then purchased 2 more (one for back up) from Healey Surgeons in August of 2008. Last night I checked my antifreeze (Prestone 50/50) and the cap was rusted and broke, same place. I put the back up one on, not that I was going to need one, right?
I'm assuming I'm buying reproductions. And I'm buying them from the folks that sell the good stuff. Here's what I'm seeing. The rivet appears to be brass, but it is only brass coated. I assume the originals were actually brass? Maybe there's the problem? Or is it the part that gets attached to the rivet?Where can I purchase a reproduction that will last longer than a year and a half. The antifreeze is good and up to the correct level, it's the cap that is rusting, then failing.
I could put on an american made cap, not correct looking and be problem free. Then put on the correct looking cap for the shows. That just doesn't sit right with me.
1st photo: the brass (coated) rivet.
2nd photo: the brass is worn off the rivet from using metal polish.
3rd photo: where it breaks
4th photo: correct 1" cap for my radiator
