I need some help guys as I only have two weeks to get this car ready for my first show. I have a 1.5 in header and no pipe from the header to the exhaust and a 948. I also have a period Big Brute exhaust for the standard 1.25 inch Bugeye exhaust pipe and a Harley Muffler that I picked up years ago. Should I

1. Use a Standard Bugeye Pipe from Moss and adapt it to the header and use the Big Brute?
2. Have a pipe cut and bent in 1.5 tubing and then attach it to the Harley Muffler (is this the correct one?)?
3. Have a pipe cut and bent in 1.5 tubing and then attach it to the Big Brute?
4. Do I have to bend the pipe up and over the axle or can it be just a straight shot with a slight bend at the muffler?
5. Other options???????????????????????????

Thanks for the help. I hope to do my shopping tomorrow, so I can finish next week.

Paul

No need to go over the axle- all you need is some straight pipe. You might want a slight kick up towards the end to bring the muffler up nearer the body. The hanger on the "Big Brute" will determine that. I have no experience with the Harley muffler, but it looks like you'll need to fabricate some sort of hanger arrangement for that.

My experience with exhaust pipe via muffler shops is that they usually don't stock anything smaller tan 1.75", but their machines should be able to shrink/expand the ends (within reason) if you can't find the exact size.

You might want to take everything to a custom muffler shop and see what they say. I had a shop do mine stainless from header to Harley exhaust. They welded a hanger to the Harley muffler, took about an hour, cost some money yes but it is the last muffler I will buy for the car.

That Harley Muffleris a little big. The one Kelly and I and others gave used is that same shape but 18-20 inches long. Kelly I'm sure will chime in with length.

Paul,
X2 what Jim said on the Harley muffler...I tried that one and it's just too long. I would find a local mom and pop muffler shop and use the Big Brute. I used my header down pipe and bought an extra long piece of 1.75" pipe, cut it to length and had the shop swage the end to fit and weld. Less than $20 that way.

Do what Gerard said about NOT going over the axle. Your brake lines run across the top of the axle. I made the mistake of having a muffler shop route the pipe over the axle, but found out later that when I went over hard bumps, the exhaust pipe smashed against the brake line and "squished" it flat!

I'll second the idea of finding a local shop to make up something for you. I have a local place that can actually make things (and not just replace bits recommended on the computer). They made up the pipe and had a muffler that would work. Straight back under the axle.

Thanks guys!
I will take it in early next week. At least I will not need to order any parts. That gives me a little extra time.

That might be the right muffler.... or the wrong one. I'd have to see other pics. What's the pt #?

I tried it under the car. It was very long. It would go all the way back to the axle. Might work. We will see next week at the shop.

You definitely have the "wrong" one. JP has one similar to yours and made it work.

This is the one I have : https://www.ebay.com/itm/Harley-Dav...Parts_Accessories&hash=item461727f58e&vxp=mtr

Notice the balance tube port, I cut that off of mine (the whole flange actually, see my thread on it). There are mufflers of this same design that don't have that port. You also want the muffler that DOES NOT have a honeycomb in it when you look down it from either end. I believe that started around '07 or so. Also note that the last two hyphenated digits of the part number are the model year so that 65842-00A would be a 2000 model year with the A designating some sort or model/series run ( not sure about the A but the digits are falling in line with what I've been seeing).

I wouldn't put the big one on and that smaller one you have I bet would be very loud.

If it were me I'd run 1.5" all the way back into a HD muffler with the flange cut/plug punch/baffle mod like I talked about in that thread. That way you'd get the best of everything and it should be quiter and more efficient than the big brute and 1.75 on the street. It should definitely increase your low end power over 1.75 and the BB and that little 948 needs all the help it can get. I'd also make sure that the 1.5 pipe was expanded to go OVER the header collector. You don't want them to just shove the pipe in and weld it as it creates a restriction and turbulence. The pipe or coupler in front should always go INTO the pipe or coupler behind it. Sometimes you have no choice like with a same size pipe coupler but you should always try to have the flow smooth into the pipe behind it and not run into the leading edge of the next pipe. Air has mass (like your car) and running air into the leading edge of the next pipe is similar to running your car straight into and over a street curb. That's a gross exaggeration but you get the idea. If I have to go into a leading edge I always grind/taper the leading edge smooth. That all being said, it's doubtful you would notice the hamsters sweat more if you didn't. :jester:

Got it running with the new exhaust. Thanks for the help guys! The local exhaust guy knew about the bend over the axle and was able to make it all up in less then and hour.
