Back in 1959 my older brother and I were shipped back east to stay with my aunts and uncle and grandparents for the summer. My younger aunt's boyfriend wanted to take her out on the lake to go boating. "I have to watch my nephews", she said. "Bring then along", he said, and proceeded to pick all of us up in a small two seat sports car. Being the smallest, I had to scrunch behind the seats in the trunk area while my older brother sat on aunt Sally's lap. I thought the car was really cool, when I was five.
Fast forward to 1969 and my first car was a 1962 Austin Healey 3000 Mk II. Drove it out west to LA when I was 16; had to replace the clutch release bearing and a pushrod before I could drive back east to Ohio.
Life goes on, I became a pilot and fantasized about owning planes, but never forgot that little car that took us to the boat ride.
Retirement hits and I have nothing to do, so I start looking for a Mk I Sprite and find a complete 1960 body shell with title on ebay. Yay! I finally have the car that I had to scrunch behind the seat to go for that boat ride so many years ago.
Along with the body shell (complete with all the metal work already done) from the same seller I acquired a 1962 Mk II rolling chassis, the running gear from the body shell, two extra engines (948 and 1275) two more transmissions (one is a side loading three speed trans that fits an "A" series engine) and two pickup trucks full of parts.
I'll be busy this summer; probably next winter also.
