Spitfire My Spit needs a frame. How close is a GT6.

How close is a GT6 frame to a Spit.

We are pretty, handy can anyone change the Spit body to the (69)GT6 frame.

The car I am looking at has no title. I think it is a property owner cleaning up the yard and disposing of the car without a title(former tennent). Sounds illegal?

Larry, is the Spitfire also a 1969, or at least a "Mk3" Spitfire? If so, it will be a fairly easy swap. You'll need to relocate the radiator mounts (further back on a Spitfire), and you'll need to do something with the handbrake cable guides, i.e., transfer them to the GT6 chassis. I think most everything else is already there, although you'll have brackets for the lower rear wishbones on the GT6 that you won't need unless you plan to keep the Rotoflex rear suspension (in which case you'll need to get the handbrake cable guides and rear shock mounts from the GT6 body and transfer them to the Spitfire body).

It gets a bit more complicated -- more things to move -- if you're dealing with a different generation of Spitfire, especially in bonnet hinge pivot mounts and the like. And there's some trimming around the firewall area on the Spitfire tub if you're going the Spit 6 / GT6 convertible route.

My Spit is a 1977 and the GT^ is a 69.

I would make a Spit six perhaps. My Spit has a recently rebuilt 1500 done by a professional and dual HS4's. It runs really well.

However a six would be nice.

Ok. In this situation, you will lose the rear chassis extensions you have now, but they're really only there to support the extra rear bumper overrider original to a '77 Spitfire. At the front, you'll need to cut your hinge pivot boxes off the Spitfire chassis and (measuring carefully) weld them onto the GT6 chassis. It might be easier to try to remove the complete front crossmember with those boxes and graft that onto the GT6 chassis, as the basic crossmember itself is pretty much the same (at least in shape and general configuration) for all years. Taking the complete crossmember and moving it might make it easier then also to bolt up the front quarter valences, etc.

I thought that to convert to a spit 6 I could use the frame and 6 suspension and hood. Only the body would have to be changed. Then mount the 69 bumper somehow.

Well...yes. If that's the way you want to go, it'll work. I've never been keen on the "look" of the older bonnet style on the newer rear body, but it does mate up just fine! That's assuming the GT6 bonnet is good enough to use. Otherwise, you'll be struggling to close a stock '77 bonnet on that six (unless you want to move the entire engine back, but then you're getting into more major work....)!

Larry, can't find a frame in your area. I think I have one at the warehouse with a body some drunks used baseball bats on. It's a '79 I think, had rubber bumpers and a stand up radiator. North Carolina 50 mile north of Charlotte.
