MGB My new 1977 MGB? cant turn distributor

I just bought this 77 MGB for $500. I like everyone one of us is always looking for inexpensive MG's. I drove it home about 12 miles when I bought it. No rust in the rockers, only thing really wrong is that it had been hit and the motor mount has been welded to the frame due to the accident. But my question is I want to adjust the distributor and I have loosened the bolt but it still doesnt want to turn. Should I just keep tapping it gently and hope it will loosen up?

Hello Tom,
I would suggest a good soaking in penetrating fluid. If you then still can't turn it, I would unbolt the clamp plate from the block and try and lever the distributor upwards out of the block. Clean everything up, lubricate and reassemble.

I agree, also there is an "O" ring around the distributor that may be hard and is stuck. A little gentle arm strong manuvering will probably do it.

Dollars to donuts someone overtightened the clamp. Remove the two bolts holding the distributor to the block and remove the whole thing. Investigate condition of clamp. People overtighten them, they warp, and bind on the distributor. I know, because I've done it. I managed to bang the bejeebus out of mine and get it squared up again, but you may have to replace it. While it's out, see if it will turn freely.
