TR2/3/3A More TR3 Trunnion Questions

When assembling the the trunnion to the vertical link....how much of a gap should you end up with where they meet at the seal?...the way it seems now the seal is kind of flapping around rather than being slightly compressed. I cold almost turn the trunnion another turn but the brass stop casting slightly hits the vertical link. Being an aftermarket trunnion I'm wondering if it should go one more turn and then backed off?....the casting could be lightly filed to accomplish this. Also the manual says" screw trunnion home without forcing and then turn back one complete turn, and then positioned so that the shackle pin lies parallel to the body of the car,but inwards, between the base of the vertical link and the chassis frame as the shackle pin is offset." What is the shackle pin and what exactly are they getting at here? Any advice on this welcome. Karl

Karl-

Reading that part of the manual has me scratching my head too, but I thought the shackle pin was basically the threaded rod part of the trunnion that connected to the a arms. Should be parallel to the frame, but the rest of it has lost me.

All they have to do is operate freely through the 28-1/2 deg (front lock) to 31 deg (back lock) range of turning that they do. If they bind on the thread before those points, they need to be screwed out one turn.

The "shackle pin" is the pin that will carry the lower A arms. They are telling you that the vertical link is offset towards the outside of the car, and the shackle pin is offset towards the center of the car, relative to each other. There is also the boss where the steering stop adjustment screws on. It is towards the center of the car, if you've got the trunnion on right.

I know there were old stories of some issues with Triumph build quality occassionally, but it does surprise me they have to spell out which way to put on the trunnion!

:iagree:

The seal should inflate a little when you get some grease in, so I'd say "flapping around" is correct.
