I've finally got round to booking my 40th birthday present from Mrs Catfood I got last year! I'm off for a days rally driving in Mk 2 Escorts at this place - Bill Gwynne's Rally School . This will be my first time behind the wheel of a rally prep'ed car so I'm not sure what to expect. Any of you experienced competitors out there got any advice for a rally driving newbie.

It has always been my ambition to take the Healey on a few rallies before I get around to restoring her properly. The bodywork is quite tatty so I don't mind getting a few dinks and stonechips. I think the car would look great with racing numbers, no bumpers and some additional lighting (period of course), the few dinks will just be 'badges of honour'. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

Any of you experienced competitors out there got any advice for a rally driving newbie.

1.Tighten harnesses until they hurt....then tighten a bit more.
2. Right foot down to the floor at all times. Shift gears as needed.
3. Steering wheel should generally be turning the opposite direction to the turn (in connection with Rule # 2).
4. As well as the steering wheel and handbrake; tree stumps, rocks and other cars may be helpful in altering direction.
5. Never press on the middle pedal under any circumstance.
6. If you are viewing the road thought the windshield (and not the sidewindow), you are pobably going too slow.
7. Have fun!

The harness tip seems a good one. I have a feeling if I try the others the instructors may be a bit dischuffed and start looking for the ejector seat! I think I have probably tried all the techniques mentioned at one time or another but it will make a nice change to do it intentionally!!!!
