So that you get a straight answer: There were very few ordered with the automatic gearbox, consequently the survivors are as rare as rocking-horse droppings. The exact numbers will be in my book at home, I'll look it up.

That said, Tony Barnhill probably has several, which he is collecting in conjunction with all the ZS carbs and emissions systems in which he is trying to corner the market...............

Yep, I have an MGC GT automatic...however, MGB auto's are rarer than hen's teeth.

Okay, here goes.

They started offering the auto box in late 1967 for the '68 model year, and it was discontinued at the end of the 1973 model year.

Totals were 452 roadsters and 1,285 GTs that came with the slushbox.

Some of you guys kill me.

I'm willing to wager that you have never seen, let alone drive an automatic MGB or MGC. Yet they are apparently the empitome of MG-dom.

Well...you are wrong. My autoboxed MGC is a joy to drive..and mine has definitley been driven! From the midwest to the East coast, to the West Coast, to Canada, to Texas, to Florida; on 24-hour 1000 mile endurance rallies...I would not give it up for anything.

I had a roommate in college in 1974 who had a 1972 MGB/GT (I lived in Michigan at the time...he was from the Detroit area). That car was a hoot!

The BW35 is near bullet-proof....and was used in many British Marques (listed above) as well as American iron such as the Rambler.

It makes the MGC even a better road car...and a heck of a collectible for the MGB than a standard 4 speed or O/D!

I have the same distain for ~all~ automagic transmissions, Rick. IMO, they should be made illegal. Lowered the bar for the average skill-set necessary to acquire a permit/license. Populated the highways with cumquats./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Same with air conditioning. Florida's popluation would be easily cut by 2/3 without it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

I can imagine that there could be a real potential for automatic MGs, considering our current culture. There are no cup holders, so you have to hold your half-latte/half-expresso/half-cappuccino between your legs. Also, you have to be punching up your Tom-Tom or GPS. Meanwhile, you're on your cell phone, while offering a few tips to the moron in the next lane. So, I can see how an AT would help lower your stress.

I helped install a BW35 from a TR2000 into a TR6 a few years back. It worked well. The 6 Cylinder cars have enough torque to lose through their automatics. The one MGB automatic I drove struggled a bit.

Just because of the low numbers it doesn't make the car any more collectable. My TR8 FHC is one of less than 400. Probably one of the rarest TR's considering there were less than 2800 TR8's. On top of that my TR8FHC is also a factory air conditioned car in Carmine Red (Rare color for 8's as well). Unfortunately, none of those items make my car more valuable than other TR8's. In fact the FHC part, the part that makes it the most rare (less than 400 including the pre-production and production cars) is actually the biggest detractor of value. The roadsters are simply more sought after. Desire makes items collectible, the more people that desire the item the more collectible it is. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Yep,But you will need a Marina doner car. The engine/trans goes in a rubber bumper MGB with minimal mods. I sold two set-ups for that purpose but do not know if the projects were ever completed. That was 15-20 years ago.
