Anyone got an loose HS6 Carb handy that they can take a measurement on? I just need the overall length, from gasket surface to gasket surface. Thanks

Peter,

Wow. You are quite correct, of course. Thanks for pointing that out - hope I didn't cause confusion. What is the difference between H and HS, anyways?

As for the gopher, well spotted. Maybe that is the cause of funny noises I hear under the hood?

Cheers,
Adrian

Sorry late on the scene, I have one in the shop, I'll look and post later today, if I forget, just call me Scott.

The HS has the flexible hose from floatbowl to jet. It is also a shorter carb, flange to flange, than the H series. If Hap doesn't surface with a measurement, remind me and I'll throw a tape on some I have in the garage.

Adrian, LOL The way I know it, and some of this is true knowledge, and some may be interpreted, but:

H means side draught (tho I haven't seen an up or down draught SU) They all have the float bowl attached with a banjo bolt through which the gas flows to the jet

H S have a remote float bowl hung on the carb body and the aforementioned flexible jet tube, (Side bowl, maybe?)

H D is has the float bowl beneath the carb body with a Diaphragm on the jet.

H IF has an Integral Float bowl under the carb, no diaphragm and the jet sits in the bowl.

Bill Murray could help with the gopher, but beware of collateral damage!

FYI, the C-type MG Midget had a downdraught SU, and as far as I know, they were the first to have a return spring in the dashpot. Contemporary sidedraught SUs had heavy pistons, and relied on gravity.
There were some updraught SUs, but I can't remember to what they were fitted, except of course for the famous ones, of different design, on the R-R Merlin!

Thanks Roger. I figured there had to be some.

Oh, I forgot, the number (4, 6, etc) in the case of these carbs, is he number of 1/8s eighths of an inch over 1" of the butterfly bore. So in this case 6 is 6/8 or 3/4" or 1-3/4.

The HIF44 are 44mm or 1-3/4"

Cool bit of trivia!

And...the HIF44 (now being touted by Moss and Vicky Brit as a bolt on replacement for the ZS175 for the RB MGB) is very similar to the HIF6 that I used on my 1978 MGB back in 1992.

and a ZS175 = 1.75" and a ZS150 = 1.50"

In case you didn't know.
