Lifters in engine

So...everyone here knows that I am NOT very mechanical. Some one asked me a question yesterday about my MGB and I have no answer. The car was built August 1970 and S/N is GHN5UB220017 G which makes it a 1971 model. Question is: does the engine have hydraulic or mechanical lifters? I don't even know the difference or what a lifter looks like :frown:. Any help here? Thanks

Lifters are part of what connects the camshaft to the rocker assembly - in other words, it is part of what makes the intake and exhaust valves open and close at the right time.

And if original your lifters look like the ones in the drawing and not the ones with the pic. 1972 was the first year for the short lighter lifters and longer push rods. Bob

The reason you need to adjust your valves every 6,000 miles is that you don't have hydraulic lifters. You are adjusting your valves, right?

Gary..Have a look at this Twist Video of setting the valves,he makes it seem easy.Seems I take a bit longer because i just crank till the valve i want to do is closed and I don't worry too much if i need a few more cranks.

My personal goal is to be able to adjust the valves as fast as John Twist does it in that video. On a good day I think I'm up to about three times as long.
