LBCs are not all that bad.... cars in Moscow!

I've been in Moscow for the last 14 days. I've only seen one British car (A Rolls Royce). Lot's of expensive German ones though. It comes as no surprise that the Russian built cars are crappy. The Lada seems to be the at the bottom of the food chain. I'd say just above the Yugo. Do you think they have some sort of "Russian Car Forum" for enthusiasts?

Plenty of American cars here.

Interesting trip, interesting city, ready to come home.

I bet there is a forum for just about every type of car at this point, I know in Germany Trabants are actually quite popular as hobby cars.

Post some pictures of your trip if you get a chance, and safe travels.

I heard a story on either "The World" or "Marketplace" the other night about how the Russian government is starting its own "Cash for Clunkers" program to get people to buy Russian cars. The story had some fun interviews with a few Russian citizens who all agreed that Russian cars are crap and they would not like to have one if it were free. The one person interviewed who said he would like to own a Russian car was a German ex-pat.

Interesting about Russia. I've been in Sweden the past month, and I've seen zero LBCs, but quite a few classic American cars, mostly from the 50s and 60s. They seem to have more of a mystique here than British ones. At one point, I saw a whole string of Corvettes out for a Sunday ride, apparently a club outing. Must have been several dozen. The drivers probably went without lunch for a month to save money for gas.

I did happen upon a Citroen-club outing at one point. Lots of 2CVs. Seeing all those Citroens working all at once was quite a rare sight.

No British cars though. Wonder why?

The Swedish cars were half English to begin with. It was just that they continued development on their own.

They love American cars and their registration laws support this, much like the British registration laws support home-built cars. They just never imported British cars, probably because of the limited indreclimate systems and poor performance in ice conditions.

There were plenty of British cars originally sold in Denmark. As the existing cars deteriorate and the Dollar looses value to the European currencies, the Danes are importing used British cars from America

Volvo B18 engines were originally built in England. The P1800 body was made by Jensen. Saab used the TR7 motor.

I know that for years I saw ads in Practical Classics for the USSR - the unloved socialist soviet register. no website though. I actually have a Skoda on my "one that got away" list and have a friend with a Niva and a Trabant. There was a Moscovitch on Kijiji recently - too bad it was three provinces away cause it was outrageous!

Interesting info, Donn, about the connection between Swedish and British cars. I was aware of the connection to Japanese cars, but not Swedish. Amazing what influence these cars had, and yet the industry still died.

In other news, my wife is in Copenhagen today, just sightseeing. I would have joined her, but I have to work. Bummer!
