J-type overdrive question

I have a TR6 j-type overdrive transmission out of the car that is leaking fluid from the gaskets. When I attempted to seperate the overdrive unit from the transmission to replace the gaskets, it would only seperate about an 1/2 inch. I'm sure something is engaged to keep it from coming apart. Has anyone run into this problem; if so, how did you solve it?

The Buckeye Triumphs web page has instructions on a J-type overdrive rebuild and they mention an issue that can cause binding (spline loading).
Buckeye Triumphs J-Type Overdrive Disassembly Instructions

Note that on reassembly they have the following comment as well.

"On the first attempt the OD wouldn't go in the last half inch or so indicating the splines were misaligned."

I just wanted to let you know that I did what was suggested in the Buckeye's website and it worked very well. Thanks for the help.
