I've confused myself -- timing questions...

Spring tune up time, and I'm working on getting the Tunebug in as good a shape as I can. I'm sure I'm dealing with worn bits almost everywhere, but I'd like to keep driving around a bit while the new motor is being planned/rebuilt.

2 questions for setting the static timing--I've managed to get myself confused:

1. To rotate the engine, I put it in 4th gear and push the car. Which way should I be pushing the car to check where the points are opening/closing (with a test light hooked up)?

2. To retard the timing, which way do I rotate the dizzy?

Side question -- I seem to remember that for Bugeye H1 carbs the mixture nut goes out maybe 6-7 flats for a starting point, instead of the 12 listed in many manuals. Is this correct?

Good plan Drew! Don't let it atrophe!

1. Push the car forward to get the timing mark lined up correctly on the pulley (with the iggy OFF). I believe it should be in the 8°~10° BTDC (Before Top Dead Center) position. THEN connect the test light to the coil L/T lead going to the points, and ground. Turn the dizzy clockwise first until the light goes out, then back until the place where it *just* comes on...

2. Dizzy runs counter-clockwise, so to retart timing turn it in the direction of rotation (C.Clockwise).

2.x I always start with 12, and tweak until the piston raise response is correct. Some may have other 'ways'. We'll see!

Thanks, Doc. Comforting to know that I was doing the timing correctly.
