GT6 Isuzu Trooper Gear reduction starter for TR6/GT6?

Guys,

https://www.teglerizer.com/triumphstuff/73gt6br_tropperstarter.htm

Read this article on converting the Isuzu Trooper starter for fitment onto the the GT6.

What differences are there between the GT6/TR6 that would prevent a TR6 from the same conversion?

I know the transmissions housing bolt patterns etc. are very close from TR3 to TR6.

My understanding is that the flywheels/pressure plates were the primary differences between these models. Let me know your opinions and possible issues.

For a $100 this is an interesting idea.

Paul's website is a significant LBC resource and he's a bona fide LBC guru (he's also a friend of mine and a great guy). However, he's not always deeply concerned with originality. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but I think we all should at least consider it when wrenching these cars.

The original, factory-installed starters generally last about 30 years or so, often more. As such, I can think of no compelling reason to go with a more expensive or "gear reduction" starter.

Unless, of course, you plan on driving the car hard for more than thirty years!

Purchase an original replacement from one of the big three vendors and slap it on.

Also, ensure that your wiring is updated and in perfect working order. Silly to replace the starter if the peripheral wiring and grounds have not been carefully checked/corrected as well. This is very easy to do and one of the most important, safety-related items you can perform. And maybe all that is needed is to replace the brushes?

Original = original to the marque: looks correct; is correct, it's relatively cheap, and it works like a charm.

Good luck, let us know . . .

Often the starter is fine but the bushings are worn and cause the starter to drag. Replacing the bushings can make a huge difference in how easily your starter turns.

Then again, I use a gear reduction on my TR6 for the added clearance with my headers and the easier starting with the increased compression.

I purchased a gear reduction starter for my TR6, worked find for the first month, then purchased a new spiral wound battery, the NEW type of battery, then started having trouble with the starter not spinning really fast, I kept the batter on charge, had the old starter rebuild for 80 bucks, and thinking it was the new starter I put the refurbised one back on, still same had starting problem, the battery showed charged full. I decided to take the battery out and have it checked at autozone and the battery was bad. they did give me a brand new one so the starter was not the problem. I like the gear reduction starter but just have not put it back on. by the way those new type batteries, if they discharge alot, like almost dead, they are ruined, they dont come back from charging like the old style batteries, so I have a brand new spiral battery sitting in the garage

Weren't you able to get the battery seller to warranty it? At least a pro-rata, I would think.

Or is it one that came from China de-leaded?
