TR6 Installing AC in a TR6 ???

Has anyone installed a modern AC (e.g. Vintage Air) in a TR6? I am restoring a '72 TR6 and would like to add AC. Vintage Air offers a universal unit that includes heat, air, and defrost. This is especially appealing since I need to replace blower motor and heater core in the current configuration.

Thanks!

I did one a few years ago. It works well. A friend of mine did the installation. I ended up selling the car that summer. Haven't done another TR6 lately but when I do I plan to add that as well. I have several heaters if you need the motor and core. PM me if interested.

Marv, was there any issues fitting the unit under the dash? When you ordered the unit, did you tell them what you were putting it into? I put one in my mustang and it fit and worked real well. I also would be interested in putting one in my TR6. Any advise?

All, I have a complete system out of a TR6 and it is a task to get one out. How they put the hoses in the panels and the top hat cover on the inter deck was really interesting, and they also used a smaller glove box, which was plastic, a much better one than the fiber board. Anyone know if someone sells them by themselves?
I won't be using this on my car so if I can help anyone with a part or two, just let me know.

That's good information for a TR6 and a TR4 and 4A as far as the interior modifications needed. If I ever figure out how to drive the Compressor on the 4 cly engine Maybe I can do a similar write up. Don't hold your breath!

It seems like about the only place would be on the left side of the engine. I would have to be forward (or low) enough to clear the distributor, but otherwise there may be enough room there. If you could add a second pulley on the front of the existing crank pulley (probably want an electric fan for this, too), then you could drive it that way.

Another alternative for driving it would be to see if you can get the Moss serpentine drive parts from the supercharger kit, that might give you some options. Or do it in conjunction with a supercharger installation .

Darrell, My thoughts are to mount the compressor as low as possible where the current Alternator / Generator is mounted and get one of the small alternators mounted above the compressor all on the right side. I'd use a double pulley Compressor and drive the small alternator from the second pulley groove. I've already converted to the thin belt pulley set-up. I'm getting a complete engine from a friend to use in order to mock up the set-up. I have photos of an installation done in England placing the alternator on the left side but in order do this the distributor was replaced by a crank fire system. This was done in part to give them enough room on the left side to mount the alternator low and far enough forward to be driven by a double pulley on the crank. I'll send you the photos if you'd like to see them.

That could work. The compressor should be shorter than the generator, so it won't be so close to the exhaust manifold. Before I installed the supercharger, I had a very compact Nippondenso alternator (from a forklift, I think). It was quite small, but still more amps than the original generator (40 or 50 amps, if I recall).

That British AC unit looked good to me. The only problem I could see is getting my legs in under the dash with that unit installed. I just barely clear the dash right now. The seats are already all the way back. These six's don't have the leg room that the three's have.
