Ignition key

Hi guys - so it begins already.....

The MGC is missing her ignition key but the switch assembly etc is there. Replacing the whole assembly seems like a last of money and time, so can I just pull the tumbler assembly and get that re-keyed or replaced?

Key needs to be in it IIRC to remove the cylinder, so IMO it's time to remove the assembly and see a locksmith.

BoneIdle posted about this with some pix a month or so ago, too.

Yep, column cowl off & remove the entire thing to give to locksmith....& find one that's been doing it for a long time.

Hey FYI on key blanks. The ignition key for my GT6, and my MAC tool box key are now the same. It just happens to be the same blank. So I had a locksmith redo the tool box tumblers to match the car. The logic there is if you have a LBC you must have tools near by.

You lock your tool box?

You don't?
Why? They're on wheels....if somebody gets in who's not supposed to, they can roll them out & onto a truck, locked or unlocked.

Okay I don't lock the tool box, or the garage, or the house ... about the only thing I ever locked with any regularity (when the top was down) was a 1969 Mercury Marquis Marauder convertible . The GT has the original ignition switch attached to the steering wheel, and when I parked it I would crank the wheel over and lock that.

Take a look in the engine compartment on the passenger side wheel well. My car has a key bolted there.
Came from the factory that way!

Yeah, the toolbox has wheels.....but, you ever tried to lift it?

When we used to have to move one from shop to shop, it was remove all the drawers one at a time, stack in the truck, THEN move the box (empty).

Either you have a pittance for tools or your knuckles drag on the pavement.

Oh........and I did run into one thing, once, long ago.....insurance.

Had an employee who was subject to a break-in and loss of tools.
Insurance would not cover loose tools or any tools in a toolbox not locked.

Now, that may or may not have been capricious, may or may not be how it is now.....but we all got our locks functional after that.

There'd be no lifting mine. Red, locked and wheeled, yes. The size of a refrigerator and weight of an MGB.

Well, I have 2 huge Craftsman boxes full of nothing but Craftsman tools plus a Craftsman roll-around work table full of Craftsman tools - I could run a business out of my garage! & if I do find a need for something I don't have, I go buy it!

My insurance company has looked my garage over, knows what's in it & says everything is either covered by my homeowner's policy, my under restoration car policies (yep, very inexpensive policy that covers disasters in the garage while the cars are in non-running status) or my roadworthy car policies....against theft, fire, etc.

Do my locks work? Yes.

Do I use them? No.

Do I know where all the keys are? Yes.

Will I start using them? Probably not.

Would I try to influence anybody else? No.

One of you is talking about a home garage and the other is talking about a place of business with employees. Sort of an apples and oranges thing it seems.

Could be.
Could depend on the insurance company, too.

I still am listed as an auto-repair business out of my home (albeit for 10+ years, it hasn't happened).

I've seen 4 guys try to pick up a loaded roll cab, and watched the look in their eyes as the hernias popped.

You don't just roll them out, pick them up, and throw them into a truck.

Knew one shop (dealership) where one guy had a BIG screwdriver/prybar hanging on the side of his roll cab.
Thieves used it to pop open all the boxes.
Insurance declined to pay for tools because of that, so, you never know.

No, they couldn't throw it in the back of a truck, but they could roll/winch it up the ramp into an enclosed trailer pretty quickly if they wanted to. Seeing enclosed trailers backed up to garages is not an umcommon site either.

Locks, of any sort, are for honest, and mostly honest people, to reduce crimes of opprotunity. They work well for that.

Ah, didn't know his wasn't just a place where he hung out....yep, apples & oranges.

& seeing trailers coming & going from my place is commonplace.....but, I've got security systems inside & security lights outside plus this:
