Hehehehehehe..... Wowie-zowie. Nice touch, that one pee-lot reading the chart at about 12ft. AGL.

If I remember correctly the Tornadoe's nap of the earth flight system is pretty much a hands off system. Computer does the flying or is at least a strict nanny. Regardless, very impressive stuff!

Shawn, The Tornadoes use Terrain Following Radar, totally computer controlled. Those are Mirages I think, which is ironic because the music is called 'Champions'.

Zipping along NAPE at no telling how many hundreds of knots & the guy is reading a TOPO & then tosses it on the dash....

*sigh*

...that just reminds me how much I miss it.

Nellis... Chasin' "Blackbirds" over desert I got it "demo'd" while we were up burnin' JP-4 waitin' for the first pass... bit unnerving, actually. Kept wantin' to grab 'n yank, IYKWIM. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And that would have been your second mistake.

I may have posted this pic before, in which case apologies. It was snapped by an old colleague of mine of the opening flyby, not just taking off or landing, at a 70's airshow by a VC10 (the "iron duck").

I also remember seeing a video of UK Buccaneers flying through sand dune gaps in a time that was probably before terrain following radar.

I have seen the RAF flyboys in the Elan Valley in Wales

It's very weird to be up on the side of hill and LOOK DOWN on them. In our area, mostly Tornado GR1s, Jaguars, Buccaneers and C-130s.
