Wedge I need some TR7 and TR8 Owners to sound off!

Hello Board:
I am a member of the Triumph Sports Car Club of San Diego, CA. Those of you in clubs on the western half of the United States are probably aware of the annual Triumphfest Conventions over here. Our club is gearing up to host the 2005 convention in October of 2005 (naturally).

I have been talking to our Triumphfest chairman about doing a special... errr... honorarium at the convention. Seeing as how the TR7 came out in 1975, making 2005 the 30th anniversary of the 7, I felt that some attention should be drawn to that model. Doesn't hurt that I love the Wedge and wish I could have my 1977 Jubilee Edition again. 5-Speed with a sliding Sunroof... if I knew just how hard it would be to replace...

anyways...

The theme of the convention will NOT be dedicated to the 7 and 8. However we do wish to have a display commemorating them. We have set the call out to our 7/8 owners and I felt I'd gauge the board here as well.

What would you want to see if you were there?

What would you consider as important examples of the model? Spyder, Victory Edition, Southern Skies edition... so on.

Do you know of anyone who would make an appropriate guest speaker for these cars?

What vendors would be interested in sponsoring a special TR7/8 exhibit?

Drop your answers here or send them to me at:

TriumphSCCSD@cox.net

Thanks!

Chris

Chris,

2005 is a double anniversary for the Wedge because the 1980 model year TR8 will be 25 years old next year (hence eligible for classic car plates in some states). So, a tribute to the TR7-TR8 next year could include both anniversary cars.

Maybe some of the forum members on the other side of the pond could suggest a keynote speaker who was involved in the original design of the Wedge. One of my MG books shows mockups of the car as a replacement for the MGB as well as the TR6, so the company obviously considered it the future of firm. A speaker who could outline some of these design vs. manufacturing decisions could be very interesting.

We wedge drivers need to stick together. I think all that was mentioned should be there. What is the southern skys version?

What is the date for this show?

It looks like I may have a new goal date for getting my TR7 finished.

In Michael Cooks Book "Selling Triumphs in America" he mentions some of the "special editions" that BL/JRT had devised to generate sales excitement for the TR7. Since there were no performance upgrades, the special editions were simply special trim or option packages. Some examples naturally are:

Victory Edition: White stripe along side, white
"wagon wheel" mags and a vynl roof.

Southern Skies: Similar to vicotry edition, with small moon/sun sticker on lower front wing, sliding sunroof. Sold only in the Southeastern region of the US. No dates given

Spider and 30th anniversiarry editions as well.

Triumphfest is in Octber of 2005, 'round the 5th or so. The official date has to be approved first, will get that info to you all soon.

Keep the ideas flowing and spread the word to all 7/8 owners you can!

That would be perfect! The nature of my work prevents me from attending anything that is not local from about May through the middle of September.
