How organized are your tools?

I keep mine as organized as possible, sometimes to the point of being inefficient. Almost everything is in the rollaway toolbox except the larger power tools and sorted by use / type of tool. I also seperate Metric and Standard within each drawer. The system isn't perfect but it works.

Not to mention things such as Flat blade, Phillips and PoziDrive screwdrivers, Box end wrenches vs combination wrenches or open ends, Deep sockets, regular sockets, 6 point, 12 point............
You get the idea!! Thats why there are five toolboxes in my garage. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Ha! Usually I call for the wife when I can't find something because either she or the boys have been in the tools! And because I work midnights, the boys usually aren't home when I'm in the garage...

And I've seen Jeff's garage. Much more organized than a one-time look would indicate! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Tim, I have shelving, too!!!! And a nut and bolt cabinet. My main problem is a lack of space.

Yeh,
If you don't put it back where it belongs... How will you ever find it?

Mike

I was organized before my wife busted my system. It was simple, when you start a job, just leave the tools next to the project until completion (none of that put back in the box stuff). This way you can start up again on the project at a moments notice, even if it has been seven months since you last worked on it. (OK, OK, so maybe it is a bit tricky having to jump over the differential and not step on the carbs when you get into the family car every day, but hey...it's much eaiser than cleaning up after each days work right? And after all, if she had been watching where she was going, she wouldn't have tripped over the brake calipers!)

Geez...first ya want them clean, and now ya want them organized too?!? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

I hear ya Steve. Even in the Garage of my dreams, i dont think my tools wouold ever be "nascar pit" organized. I can dream tho.... . I tend to use them more than admire them.

Well – As you can see I tend to keep things somewhat organized in my Garage – in a Mad Scientist meets Tim Allen kind of way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

I make a lot of use of old coffee cans and my whole garage is lined with peg board. My rollaway tool box isn’t as organized as I’d like it to be. Currently I have the three main drawers dedicated in the following way.

Drawer #1) Miscellaneous
Drawer #2) Wrenches.
Drawer #3) Sockets.

I also have a great collection of automotive manuals for vehicles I don’t own anymore and in a couple of cases those of cars I never did. Hey, don't judge me - ya never know when they might come in handy.

Anyway all that matters is that I know where everything is. Right?

I'm semi-organized, sometimes, for short periods. Here's a recent shot of my garage (that's my Jag's IRS on the floor):

I used my box usually 6 out of 7 days a week when doing tyres, batteries, oil changes and charging systems at work for about 4 months so it was kept very organized. I've stopped letting friends borrow it since it comes back in disarray every time they use it. I think I may be too anal about organizing it but my garage is another story, too much stuff and too little space.

No judging here. I still have the manual for the TR6 I didn't buy 20 years ago when I got my JH, the B2000 pickup that got stolen 10 years ago and the E-type I'll probably never be able to buy. We're about to sell our RX-7, still haven't decided if I'll throw in the manual or not.

Still working on getting the tools organized the way I like but I'll get there some day. Not too far along but at least I've mostly got tools grouped together, auto/general purpose tools in one chest, detailing tools in another, bike tools, ski tools, electronic tools, wood tools, painting tools, plumbing tools in there own boxes, etc.

PC.

If my tools were ever organized, I wouldn't be able to find anything!

I'm a very bad organizer of tools, but I know where everything is, in my garage and in my service van. If you wana mess me up, just move things around, then I can't find anything because the pile doesn't match the picture in my head. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

Every once in a while, I'll go through and organize everything, but it doesn't last.

I'm the exact oposite with my tool bag though. EVERYTHING has an exact slot it fits into, and always goes back in that slot when its not being activly used. I can tell at a glance if everything is in place. Years of packing tools around in peoples attics, yards and homes tought me that setting a tool down anywhere but my bag is a bad thing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The fridge in my garage is currently empty /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I now have to clean and put away all my tools following yesterday's final, triumphant (on an MG? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif) completion of my repair project. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
