Randall - You are right. I said that, but now I can't tell if the gas here in Canada has the 10% ethanol added. They all say it has it in the gas. I have found that I don't have any more problems if I use ESSO (EXXON to you) or Shell. For the past 3000 miles or so, I have used 87 octane and had no issues. I must also add that you suggested that I change the 50-year old rubber feeding the fuel to the banjo fittings at the float bowls on my 1958 TR3A.
I changed that rubber + stainless sheath hose in 2008 for a new one made of modern rubber and have had no issues till about a month ago when I filled up with 94 octane from Petro Canada as it was on the right side of the road and I needed some fuel. But since I had heard that the higher octane gas in Canada has no ethanol in it, I didn't add any Marvel Mystery Oil - like I have done every tankful since 2008. I add 4 ounces of it each time I fill the tank.
Well, to cut a long story short, this 94 Petro Canada gas caused me to splutter just as it had done so in 2007 whenever I used Perto Canada or Sunoco 94.
I drove 180 miles on 3/4 of this tankful of 94 Petro Canada gas and couldn't get more than 5 miles befor it would start to sputter. Like Frank Angelini reported, I would wait at idle for a few minutes along the side of the road and then I had full power again - for about 5 minutes till it would start to splutter again.
In the next village, I filled up with 87 ESSO regular and added the 4 oz. of Marvel Mystery oil. About 3 miles (and 3 more sputtering events) it suddenly cleared up and I continued on my trip to my brother's place north of Toronto. It never sputtered for the rest of that trip - by that I mean the next 700 miles where I filled up several more times with Shell 87 and ESSO 87 plus the 4 oz.of MMO. At one time on the QEW highway, I was up to 85 MPH. I concluded that the problem was a bad batch of Petro Canada 94 gas
I'll keep away from Petro Canada and from Sunoco from now on.
