Help with 1979 Radiator

hey guys! Car is at the egnine shop. They can;t complete it without a new radiator and slave cylinder. I got the cylinder covered, but any idea on the radiator? Moss Motors tells me it has to be rebuilt. I found a place "radiator.com: that has a 1975 on back to a 1967. Anyone know if the 1975 will work in the 1979? Lord help me, this car is costing me a fortune!

best,

BJ

I believe the earlier ones are smaller, and have different mountings. But I am not sure, it has been a long while since I have had a 1500.

BJ, according to my information, the '75 used a radiator that was only for that year. Anything from '76 up will work.
Have you looked into having your existing rad re-cored? it's usually cheaper, and of better quality than the current crop of repros.

Yeah, I had my old rad re-cored after I saw the poor quality of the replacement part. I had mine done by a radiator shop in Dover, New Jersey (near the Moss Motors store). It was about $200.

That wasn't the place on rte 46 by the ski shop, down from the quiet man was it?

He screwed up two BE radiators on me years ago.

Problem is I need it ASAP! Only place I found one was VB. The car is at the restoration shop, but he sent it out to the engine shop. They found the slave cylinder needed replacement as well as the radiator. Now he;s tellign me the drive chain cover look slike it was Bondo-ed and I need one of those ASAP as well. Tony, can you get that to me ASAP?? I'll contatc him.

t'll take about 2-3 days for me to get one pressure tested, cleaned, repaired as necessary (longer to recore).

1. Last year during the VB sale I ordered a 1500 (76) rad and they told me they had lost the supplier and didn't know when they would get it back. I don't know if you have actually called VB but just because it is in the catalogue don't assume they actually carry it. The only current source I am aware of for 1500 rads is MGOC spares in Britain

2. Re: timing chain cover - it's supposed to be bondoed - the thread where I learned this is here

Good luck

I just went through looking at radiators for my 76 Midget. The fan clutch came loose from the water pump and hit the back of the radiator. Moss doesn't stock radiators for 1500 Midgets. VB has them but there isn't anyone at VB who you can talk to to see where the radiator was made. It costs around $150.00 and I am guessing that it is made in Taiwan or China. I bought a used one from a MG used parts dealer (he said the radiator was in great condition) for $100.00 but when I got it there was corrosion where the tanks are soldered to the radiator core. I sent it back. I finally had a local radiator shop replace my core with a new more efficient USA made core. It cost me $250.00 but the radiator is now better than new. Hope this info helps.

When I had to replace the radiator on mine, the replacement wasn't in the VB catalog. A local shop was able to recore the old one for $100. I just told him it was from a '77 Midget and he didn't bat an eye. If you do, make sure they are aware the brackets aren't symmetric. I had to have the guy turn the bottom one around because the bolts were offset the wrong way.
