Yah, darn Stromberg in a '79 Midget. I can't change it now because it's due for a Smog check...
Awhile ago the car was sputtering, backfiring and had little power (2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears, around the 2.2K rpm mark) I discovered that the dashpot had run dry. Topped it off and things were much better..... Only sputtered in 4th gear. (I tried both 2w-50 and 80-90 gear oil in the dashpot with no difference)
I then decided to refit the original air cleaner instead of the "longflow" type that the P.O. had installed. The car ran even better after this (I figured it leaned out the mixture a bit.... John Twist is adamant that not air filter other then the original will work rith with a Stromberg) BUT.....
The car still sputters, and has little power in the 2-3K rpm 4th gear esp. It's worst when cruising along with slowly decreased speed. Very little power up hill. Runs fantastic at high RPM, like the freeway. I did the piston at 25% open test and it seemed to hold it's speed.
Here's what I'm looking for after scouring these forums:
1. pin hole in diaphragm.
2. Vacuum leaks
3. worn needle and jet
any other things or words of wisdom would be appreciated.
btw, I'm a real novice with carbs.
