I was taking the hand brake on my BT7 apart to have it re-chromed. When I tried to remove the pin than holds the release button to the rod, the rod broke right where the hole is drilled for the pin. In thinking about how to repair the rod, I am thinking it would be very easy to weld a new short piece to the existing rod. The difficult part would be either drilling a new pin hole in the rod. Maybe I could find a rod with the hole already drilled, but I have no idea where to look.
The other approach I've considered is to weld a short piece of threaded stock to the existing rod and then tap the bore in the button to add threads of the same size. Then simply screw the button onto the rod with a bit of Loctite.
Surely I'm not the first person to face this repair. Can anyone suggest a better solution?
