MGB Half shaft question

There is a rubbing coming from right rear brake drum / assembly. I removed the drum and the drum is rubbing the brake assembly back plate. Doing some road testing found that when I turn to the left the drum rubs, turn to the right no rubbing, left rub, right nothing. So obviously the half shaft and drum are moving relative to the axle housing and brake assembly back plate. I suspect either the hub is not tight, even though installed with split pin in place, and I have not removed it before. Or there is play in the bearing, or the spacer behind the bearing is worn, or missing, somehow? I cannot imagine there being play in the bearing without the bearing completely destroyed. Before I tear in there any suggestions? Anyone ran into this before? Oh by the way, I think I know the answer, but if the half shaft is completely removed can it be reinstalled properly without removing the dif cover (will the splines engage the gear, without some help, just by reinstalling the half shaft?).

I never did the ones on my MGB, but on the Sprite I could remove and replace the half shafts without messing with the diff itself.

Yep that is correct on the tube axle housing MGB, like Boggsy has. The tube axle housing there will be four bolt housing holding the bearing, and the seal goes on the outer cover, remove the hub castle nut, pull the hub off, remove the the seal housing's 4 bolts and then you can simply remove the axle. Hope this helps.
