"Gearwrenches" on sale at ACE hardware

Those ratcheting box wrenches with the really tight ratchet are normally around $10 per wrench.
I just picked up a set of 4 (7/16,1/2,9/16 & 5/8) for $9.99 at my local ACE hardware (metric equiv also on sale for same price)
I think that the sale is until the 24th so act fast.

I really want a set of these. I got a $25 gift cert from MIL for sears so It'll offset some of it.

Re: "Gearwrenches" on sale at ACE hardware

Thanks for the heads up. I went out that evening and had to go to two stores before I found them, but was able to get both sets.

Re: "Gearwrenches" on sale at ACE hardware

Are those the same as Craftsman?

Only significant difference appears to be that they are not backed by a lifetime warranty.

However, something I noticed yesterday : Even all GearWrenches (the brand name) are not created equal! I managed to lose one, so I bought a partial set to get back the missing wrench; leaving me with a duplicate 1/2" reversible offset. Both genuine GearWrench, but one has a noticeably thicker head than the other. (Tho still not as thick as the cheap clone from HF.)

Re: "Gearwrenches" on sale at ACE hardware

Thicker or thinner really doesn't seem to matter for the strength of them- We ran a thin, early set to failure (at my company, one of those big airplane companies in Seattle) to see if we could approve them to be used in the factory and the ratchet pawl broke every time but at values that we couldn't believe, they were so high! Needless to say they are in use all over the factory now!

By the way- the sale goes on until 12/31/09, I just checked.

I really like the ones with the movable heads. You can get adapters to insert and make them a ratchet wrench for sockets too.

Re: "Gearwrenches" on sale at ACE hardware

In the past I've got sets for friends as gifts, light-duty DIY'ers. After Billm's post I'm gonna get a set for MYSELF!

I'll tell you one thing: this Corvette project is causing me to fill up my metric tool box with new tools!

How bizarre is that?! built in the good old (non-metric) US of A

BTW, when we moved to Florida, the first week my daughter started school was the FCATs (standardized tests) When they got to the math, daughter puts up her hand - "what's a foot?" she asks. Of course teacher can't answer - thank goodness they had a special "immigrant" category.

Santa brought me some Metric gear wrenches for my tool box also - hurray!

Re: "Gearwrenches" on sale at ACE hardware

Went to my local Ace today. They had no wrenches and seemed to know nothing of the sale.

Re: "Gearwrenches" on sale at ACE hardware

Yep, primarily with my updated items, the engine, trans, a few others...Chevrolet used a mixture of std. & metric.

Re: "Gearwrenches" on sale at ACE hardware

Must be an older 'Vette then. By 1980, GM was almost totally metric (although they did still use a few screws with "6.3mm" heads

)

I've always enjoyed the irony, my American cars are metric, while my foreign cars were SAE (until I married someone who owned a Toyota).

BTW, Japanese metrics are different than GM metrics ... GM typically used odd-numbered wrenches (13, 15, 17, 19) while the Toy has a whole bunch of even numbers. Different threads, too.
