Gearbox Dipstick - Above High Mark?

Hi Guys,

Changed the oil in my gearbox. Drained from both the regular drain plug and also via the overdrive large nut. I let it drain for about 30 mins to ensure all fluid was out.

Since the book calls for 3.8 quarts, I installed 3.5 and then checked the dipstick. The fluid was above the High mark line.

So I drove the car for awhile, thinking the fluid would go a bit lower once settled.

When I checked the fluid line again, it still sits above the High mark on the stick.

Two questions: Any reason why I am not able to fill with 3.8 qts and only be at the High mark?
Also, do I need to drain some fluid now, or is it ok to run above the High mark? What will happen with too much fluid?

As always, thanks for your help!

1. Was that 3.8 Imperial quarts? US quarts are smaller, and I don't have the book in front of me. If 3.8 is the volume for a rebuild, there is some that stays in the accumulator.

2. It will leak more.

Hi John,

Book says capacity with OD is 3.6 liters (or 3.8 US Gal).

I guess I need to open the plug and drain some out...

Thanks,
Bob

6 1/4 British pints = 3.8 US quarts = 3.6 litres.
The book is consistent, at least.
