Gear Shift Lever Vibration

For quite a while, the gear shift lever will vibrate. It does it more as speed increases, right before a shift. If you hold your hand against it, it stops most of the noise from the vibration. It doesn't do it in 4th. I've had the car up in the air and checked the drivetrain and nothing appears to be loose or have much movement (u-joints). Any ideas? Thanks as always.

Did you lose your little spring-loaded detent ball located in the back side bottom of your shift leaver? These usually fall out, I always load mine with grease to keep it in when reinstalling the leaver.

I'll check that Bill. I also should have mentioned that it only happens some of the time. I drove it this morning and no vibration. It sounds like a rattle in the dash, but when you put your hand on the shift lever it goes away.

Some cars also had a brace from the side of the shifter housing down to the rear mount; which was supposedly added to reduce vibration at the shift knob.
