fuel pump BJ-7, sound when key turned on.

It seems that I remember that when turning on the key I heard the sound of the fuel pump priming the lines. I just hooked up my battery but hear no sound, nor when disconnecting the fuel hose from pump to carb I observe no gas in the line.

This car has sit for numerous years. Might this be a problem and, if so, what should I first check/do to verify the pump.

You were recently talking about putting a fuse in the pump circuit, did you do that?

yes I did put an inline fuse (10A slowblow) in the circuit at the pump.

First, I'd pull the hot lead off the pump, turn the ignition to "on" and test the lead for voltage. Make sure you're down stream of the fuse so it will be included in the circuit. If you don't get anything, remove the fuse and do the same test with the fuse connector on the harness side (upstream).

If you do get voltage in the first test, it may be time to pull the pump apart. If you have an original type, it might be the points.

Smack the side, not plastic bottom, with screwdriver handle. Sometimes this will jar the points& make the pump work.Or I've taken cover off & filed points. cheers Geno2

A good solution in my opinion if it can not be made to run with out a rebuild. Replace it with a modern electronic one. Of course if the points are closed and the pump failed to flip over the fuse may have blown --FWIW__Keoke

I concur with the reliability of the solid state electronic pumps. Although I have had no problems with the SU points unit in my Healey and my MGC (knock on wood), I opted to put a Lucas electronic pump in my Tiger, given that fuel pumps sit in a rather inhospitable environment on early Tigers. I've had no problems with it (again, knock on wood), whereas it literally ate up other pumps. It also has the advantage of retaining the characteristic click.
