TR4/4A Fuel mileage TR4

What kind of mileage are you getting? Granted I drive it pretty hard, but my mileage seems to have slipped significantly. I have run out of gas three times in the past month. My fuel gauage isn't working and I haven't had time to take the tank out to repair it.

Last time I checked, I was getting about 22mpg with mixed driving highway and city.

I just did a 1244 mile drive in the TR4 this past week-end, almost all highway at 70+ mph. The route was mostly above 4000' and the timing set to use regular (86/87) gas. I do have and mostly used overdrive.

For the trip I got 25.9 mpg.

Is it necessary to remove the tank? I know I've R&Red the sending unit on one of the TRs using some tricky right-angled tools (though I would first confirm that it is the sender that is at fault).

Geo, what was your route? Anything in the desert Southwest/Colorado Plateau is a beautiful drive, but I'm curious to know where you chose to go. How was the weather on your drive? Last year over labor day weekend I drove the TR6 from San Jose to St. George, UT and back, all in 100+ degree weather. Grueling! but fun in its own masochistic way.....

[edit] I didn't track my mileage on that trip, unfortunately...

...Geo, what was your route?...

Tucson - Safford - into New Mexico at Mule Creek - N thru Reserve & Datil - past the VLA - overnight in Socorro - into Santa Fe via Lamy the next morning.

Obligatory Triumph content... this GT6 sits in a yard off US180 in Aragon New Mexico:

Reason for the trip was the Santa Fe Concorso

Return was I-25 to Grants NM - 2-lane hwys thru the Zuni to Show Low - south thru Salt River Canyon to Globe and home.

Jody...While this is NOT the same GT6 you asked about...
Here is a GT6 I saw on craigslist today. FYI Gil NoCal

Sounds like a good car. I'm not a big fan of restored rides though, I like the romance of the barn find and the rescuing of some forgotten car. There's nothing like hearing the engine run for the first time after many years of neglect.

Jody...This one could be more what you were talking about.

That's definitely more my speed. Though, if my wife saw the pics she'd demand I keep it purple.

We're planning on moving up to the Seattle area in a couple years. I sincerely hope all these northwestern gems don't dissapear before we can move there!

...I don't suppose you have the skinny on that GT6?

Well, that sign doesn't exactly say they would shoot you if you wandered into the yard, but isn't a very welcoming look.

Ahh, that's where I find showing up with a cooler full of cold beer
helps. And if you're smart you wait until the stories are done and the
owner's a few beers in before you start haggling.

I like your technique.

If you're really interested, it's just north of Aragon. From Google, this is a view of the yard:

GT6 Yard Find

From that pic you can back out for a map & the exact location.
