Front Shroud Qustions

I am finally reinstalling my front shroud on my BN-1 (I am guessing they are the same on all models) I know that screws are used where it attaches to the firewall under the hood. My question is where it attaches above the instrument panel in the cockpit do you use screws or as in my case it was rivited. (the area behind the cockpit moulding) The other question is what is the best adhesive to attach the shroud to the body? I know the factory used "Dum Dum" but what is the best to use today?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Well, where it attaches above the instrument panel is, as you said, hidden by the aluminum molding. Rivets were used originally. At least on my BN2 it was and I'm pretty sure I was the first to remove the shroud.

If you use too strong of an adhesive, the shroud will be all but destroyed if it ever has to be removed again. Personally, I'd stick to something more akin to duct seal (non-hardening dum-dum) than even butyl rubber (strip caulk).

For the most part, these cars now live a much more sheltered life, not likely to be pressed into daily driver status, but there's always going to be the possibility of having to do collision repair. My two (2) cent's worth.

When installing the front shroud on my BN4 i used a product from 3M with a sticky face on one side, and a foam rubber on the other side... the foam facing the shroud of course. I used this to prevent metal to metal contact and avoid rattle! I re-rivited the shroud in place per factory procedure after making final adjustments for panel fit. Michael,IL.

Drambuie do you remember what the 3M product was called or what the number was? Or where did you buy it?

Thanks

you can check it out online as well on the 3M web site. There number is 1-800-295-5510, I ordered mine from my local paint supply at Shirwin-Williams... Michael,IL.

Yes, something along the lines of this, as long as it is a closed-cell product (open cells will retain moisture).

The shroud is mechanically attached to the chassis structure, so all you're looking for is a product to seal the bulkhead between the engine compartment and the cockpit.

Hello Randy,

The product i used was a high density closed cell type if i remember correctly, It worked very well! I don't think the factory was thinking in terms of moisture retention! The original material was a very cheap looking product and the bulk head had some open face insulation stuffed in there! I will try to dig up some of my restoration pictures and the original materials the factory used if anyone is interested. Note: the open face insulation from the factory...Nice to inhail all those particals through the vents as we motor along joyfully! 2006 Austin Restoration 030.jpg
