Front hub/brake question

Okay, I've got my front hubs assembled, thanks to the Haynes manual and a drawing someone here made about how the bearings go. I think I've got the dust shields on correctly, but want to make sure before I press on the hubs. They are currently screwed into the face of the spindle from the wheel side.

I've also got these brackets, which I think are for the brake line from the caliper. How do these mount?

Bad news... those brackets only work with 1500 cars and late RWA that moved the brake line location.

What type brake hoses do you have? The stainless steel/teflon ones?

The brake hoses are the stainless ones from Moss.

Funny, those brackets came from a '74 Midget -- must have made the change before the 1500 cars started.

Is the dust shield on correctly? If it's right I can at least get the hubs pressed on.

The dust shield looks OK to me. Some people do not use the dust shields.

The stainless hoses are not as likely to turn and end up rubbing the tire, so you will probably be OK with out the brackets. You may want to wait for a second opinion on that.

I've some of those pipe brackets on my BE (1275 with disks).
They don't do very much, perhaps just make you bolt the pipe up at the correct angle, or just give you something else to paint.

It looks like I'll need to use them, even just as spacers. Without them, the bolts holding the calipers to the spindle are too long.

You've raised a red flag, Drew. Using the brackets without attaching the hoses isn't a problem but if the calipers are the least bit loose after you've tightened the bolts down, you'll get a horrible chatter/vibration on braking. I'd suggest a set of lockwashers or lock tabs to act as a bit more spacer so when you torque the caliper bolts you ain't torquing 'em by bottoming the bolt shoulders instead of the heads on the caliper ears... along with the brackets. And some red LocTite (271) onna threads.

hey all, back to the dust shields for a question. how big a deal is it to use or not use them, just curious.

The calipers weren't loose when I had it all together without the brackets, but the bolts were just starting to rub a bit on the back of the discs. Adding the brackets should do the trick. I'll make sure everything is fully tight now that you've brought it up, though -- and will add some of the red locktite (though I've got a new set of the tabs you bend over to lock the bolts in place as well).

This is why I held off on the calipers until the morning -- I've got a few things to think through and/or get feedback from y'all. I really appreciate it!

Drew, there should be a locktab plate per caliper. 2 holes, like your hose bracket, but with a bendable tab to prevent the bolts from backing out.

I've got that locktab plate, Peter. Got new ones in my last Moss order.

I assume the stacking order for all the bits is as follows:

1. bolt head
2. lock tab plate
3. cable bracket
4. ears for the dust shield
5. caliper

Is this correct, or does the bracket go underneath the ears for the dust shield?
