Here's a photo to help warm up
the poor folks out west who got
pounded by the recent snowfall.

Balmy 80F here too. I truly feel for the guys on the receiving end of that hammer. I hated every second of 'winter' when I had to live and drive my LBC's in it.

I was a lot younger then, but I used to drive the old BE throughout the NW Pa. winters (Bradford - used to be cold spot in the nation often!), with no top, just a Tonneau to keep the snow out. BE heaters DO work, unlike my old VW. It did require a lot of bundling, but if you have the heat of youth, it didn't matter. Much better here and now though!

Update just in:

A huge avalanche buried at least two cars and seven people this morning on U.S. 40 near Berthoud Pass.

Stacey Stegman of the transportation department said all seven were rescued, and one was hospitalized.

The Colorado area has been hit by three snow storms in a row, dropping more than four feet of snow.

Crews were probing the area for other vehicles, including any that may have gone off the road.

The avalanche was described as 100-feet-wide and 15-feet deep.

We'd drive from Buckroe Beach, VA. to Beaver Falls, PA. and back twice a month rain or shine, winter or summer for three years in a row, in the MGB or the Elan. Toasty warm in winter, top down in summer. They're really part goat. And we were immune to about anything "back then".

My blue 64 Sprite met the end of its career on I-80 just north of Butler after hitting a deer carcass laying in the road (at 2 or 3 am and flying). I used to make that drive frequently from Pittsburgh to the Jersey Shore just after they opened I-80 up.

Shortly after it opened, some time in late fall or early winter ('69?) while going across it toward Philly (I-80) in the B, I had something sounding "odd" so stopped... heard the most amazing "crashing" thru the woods just to the south side... I swear to this day it was a bear... got inna B and hauled arse to the "downward leg" without worrying about any "noises" 'til I hit RT 100./bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Wouldn't be surprized if it was. There were plenty around! As teenagers we used to go up from Bradford into Allegheny State Park at night and watch them raid the dumpsters (in truth we were there for more than that /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif ). Once had a big old black bear come out of the wood, walk down Main St. to the other end and back up into the woods. Brought the whole town to a standstill!!

A friend who grew up in Butler is here, we're gonna change out the rear brakes on his car this AM... lots of us "valley" kids in central FL... He had Spridgets and MGB's as well. We bought the MG I'm doing now from him in '89.

Iss'a funnyolgame, innit? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I appreciate the nice thoughts Dale.

Were supposed to get back into the forties today and fifties this week. Which should melt a bunch more away before the next storm. Which is lining up for later this week. If it hits, that will be four storms in four weeks. The last storm dumped a lot in the high country and helped the ski resorts. The first two, the bigs ones for us, were more front range and eastern plains and didn't do much for the ski resorts. The difference between 'upslope' and 'downslope' storm systems.

Accumulations have been spaced pretty differently all over the state. We've had right at four feet total in the past three weeks (24"s, 18"s and 6"s at my house) here in Fort Collins. Further south and east got a LOT more.

I feel for ya Shawn!

I took a geology summer college
course in Beula, Colorado back in
1970. It freakin' snowed on us the
first week of july, up in the mountains
somewhere. Almost froze to death.

Rattlesnakes, scorpions, buzzards, rats, ticks,
gnats, skeeters, cactus, spit-oaks scrub bushes,
and dry as a bone....and no girls to be seen.

I enjoyed my visit to your interesting state.
I enjoyed the flight home even better!!

You did take this beach picture from the drivers seat of the Crypt car, right?

Nope!! Crypty's still hiding out somewhere.

That beach shot was taken from the Boulder
Bouncer on a sand dune about 8 miles from home.

When Crypty's home, he can hardly make it up
the driveway. Lazy SOB that he is.

4Xing in the dunes-Crypty? ha,ha,ha,ha!!

That's pretty funny Paul!!

Hey, with any luck, I'll be tarpon fishing from
my new boat by mid-February.

In a pass anywhere near Boca Grande, Dale?

"We'd drive from Buckroe Beach, VA. to Beaver Falls, PA."

Hay Doc, you knew I knew where Beaver Fall ia but did Buckroe still have the roller coaster when you were there. Lived in the Buckroe trailer park. 1961.

They'd removed the coaster by the time I got there. There were a couple groups trying to "improve" the area, developers mostly. "Improve" meant build more apartments... that didn't fly. No idea what the place looks like today, I'd likely be completely lost.

Yea, never been back. Was a nice place for a couple of young kids just starting out though.

Shawn, you keeping that Cortina warm and dry??

It still has a nice insulation of snow. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

I nearly washed the TR8 today, but it would be futile with all the melting snow and the wet streets that result from it. Might do it tomorrow or Wednesday before the arctic air bring singles digit temps and more snow for Thursday, Friday and Saturday (so far). /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

If your looking for a place to keep the Cortina dry ,Lynnwood WA has room in its garage. Might warm the family into a Lotus Cortina little bit.
