Ferrari Question

OKay - I'm going to take a break from Illustrating British cars for a bit. I want to do an illustration called The Four Horseman, What four classic Ferraris would you include in the image? I want them all to be pre 1985.

250 Testa Rossa, 250 GTO, 275 GTB and....Dino 246 GT ( not techincally a Ferrari, but the looker of them all, and it has to be yellow )

Wow, that's a a tall order!

I'd choose the original 166 Barchetta, the 250 LM, the 250 GTO and the Daytona.

But there are so many more......the Lusso, the Breadvan, the 250 California Spider, the 300 P4 race car, the Dino 206.

To be honest, I don't really want to ever own a Ferrari....somehow, they don't fit my style (whatever *that* is!).
But they do make some great looking cars.

Maybe you could only do front-engine V-12 cars with wire wheels.
All the newer cars could be part of "The Apocalypse". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

By the way, your previous work has been wonderful.

I find it harder than I thought to come up with four that have some commonality.

If they can be open wheel cars, maybe 4 50's vintage GP cars (Early 50's 4.5 liter, a Super Squalo, a D50 Lancia-Ferrari, and a 2.5 Dino from 1958) or 4 cars from the same year, say 1958 (250TR Pontoon fendered car, the 2.5 Dino F1 car, and a GT and Spyder road car).

Or maybe 4 cars with Columbo engine lineage, or maybe 4 of the 4 cylinder cars (including the 500TRC mentioned - a beautiful car for sure).

It needs a theme.

I would say 166 Barchetta, GTO, 512 LM, and ENZO - Early, middle years and late! Span the history. Of course you could do 3 series of paintings - F1 cars - Endurance cars - Street cars! (too much work?)I think they would all be popular!

Oh yeah.

Daytona (NOT the spyder), Phil Hill's Sharknose Formula 1 car from 1961 (I don't remember the model), 250 LM , and P3 or P4.

Reasons: These cars represent Ferrari's strengths and traditions in Formula 1 racing, big V12 GTs, and LeMans endurance racing.

It is hard to leave out the GTO and Testa Rossa, and the Villeneuve era Formula 1 cars, but those would be my picks for the greatest Ferraris ever.
Simon.

Sharknose 156, 1.5 litres, 6 cylinders, what a dummy I am! Won the Worls Championship in 1961, and would have been 2nd. too.
(Hill and von Trips.)

Only 4? That's a tough one with so many to choose from.
OK, here's my four:
166MM
250 GT SWB
250 GT/Lusso (a styling masterpiece in my opinion)
275 GTB/4 (the very definition of voluptuous)

If F1 cars are involved, you'll wanna choose cars BEFORE 1972... or well after:

There was a 50 Grans Prix barrier crossed by a certain upstart Briton and a Brazilian hot-shoe before 'Il Commendatore' which caused a bit of a "derailment" in the Apocolyptic Charge at about that time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Go with ~production~ Ferrari's, IMHO. Just be sure to stuff a GTO in there someplace. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

There are alot of great suggestions by the other posters, but is there some way you can extend your parameters to go to 1987?? This way you can include the F40. That was the last design that was produced before Enzo died, and it was typical of his style...no frills, bare-boned supercar.

If I had your talent and were doing this one I'd draw 3 50's vintage Ferrari road cars (250 SWB, a California Spyder, and pick one more), all with "Colorado Grand" emblems, parked in front of a drive-in style food place w/ the mountains in the background. The "forth horseman" would be an Isetta with about seven people - some obviously the Ferrari owners - all bending over to try to see the engine. The Isetta probably would not have a CG emblem. A Ford Model T pickup would probably serve as an alternate to the Isetta. The CG website at coloradogrand.org has several hundred photos & I suppose some show the emblem.

Front engined...

250 gto (or gt california spyder)
275 gtb/4
365 gt/4 - daytona coupe
599 gtb fiorano

mid engined...

512 bbi
288 gto
f-40
enzo fxx

sideach, good guestion, difficult to answer but i feel the 275 gtb (long wheel base) to be the "peenocle" of the prancing horse types, and there are so many others of this breed /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

Well if you want to keep it pre 1985 and still span some of the entire history from 1947-1985 it could be really tough. I would say that its mandatory to start with the 125S from 1947 even though many might not recognize it as such, even some car people wouldn't recognize it. Then you could end with either a 288GTO or Testarossa. Both were incredibly important cars ro Ferrari in the mideighties. The 288GT0 shows the 308 body style making the recognition factor as a Ferrari very high for either the 288GTO or the Testarossa for non car people.

The really tough part is filling in the middle of that timeline with only two cars. Trying to narrow it down to important cars from a performance perspective or a beauty perspective is equally hard either way. There are SO MANY to choose from in either camp. I guess it pretty much become subjective. Maybe try sticking to the timeline idea and pick cars roughly ten years apart or so to spread it out. Enough blathering... here is my pick for a timeline from 1947-1985.

1947 125S
1959 250GT SWB
1967 275 GTS/4 or 1968 365GTB/4 Daytona
1984 288GTO or 1984 Testarossa

I think the 275GTS/4 is prettier than the 365GTB/4 but the Daytona might be more immediately recognizeable.

Using the 288GTO helps to include the 70's with the reference to the 308 body style so that one car can sort of cover two decades.

The next question though is which will be which. White=AntiChrist/False Prophet, Red=War, Black=Famine and the fourth and final "Pale" horse=Death.

The 125S just doesn't look right in any color BUT red, its also Enzo's opening shot into the 'war' of racing a car carrying his own name as manufacturer. 250GT SWB's can look really good in white. The Daytona looks good in black, but the "Pale" is a real stinker. But I guess you could take some 'artistic license' there.

Look forward to seeing the finished product, regardless of the models you choose.

Yeah, I only included road/competition cars. You start getting into competition only cars and you just made the job even harder.
