Fast spridget?

OK guys, i keep hearing about everyone making their midget/sprite a street machine. . . . never riden or seen one. . . nor have i heard any HP or 0-60 times. . . .what performance can you expect from a fast spridget (without the big engine swap)?

even better - what's your car run in the 1/4 mile? 0-60? HP?

thanks, just curious. . .

Mike, don't do the Street Machine gig, but just for reference, my 'H' Production 948 puts out 91.4 HP @ 7400 RPM on the dyno. The 1098 car comes in at 92HP, and is entirely driveable on the street. I have no idea about 1/4 mile times, but I would guess that 0-60 on the race car is somewhere in the 5-6 sec. range.

My 1500 race-Spridget car is street legal. It's very mild, with 9:1 pistons, a Euro-cam, modest porting and planed head. Runs 94 RON fuel with no problem. I run it in sprint events (about 15 laps) and enduros (1 to 4 hour events).

1/4 mile for my car at Island Dragway is about 18.5 seconds and 0-60 is maybe 8.5 seconds. But these measurments are not the real *point* of a Spridget.....kind of like asking how many "Gs" a AA fuel dragster can pull in the turns.

Turning a 1.06 at Lime Rock with 75 HP is more of the real test for these cars (I'm still working on this).

It is the "ride" and not the speed that keeps me going. I feel the fun of driving when there isn't any power steering, the bumps in the road are FELT, and I take a corner and feel my stomach move over into the passenger seat. It is the road feel and not the 1/4 mile speed that I own LBCs for. I did own a few 1/4 milers and several street machines... they are different and the "feel" of speed is different from the feel of turns. Both are fun; just very different.

i agree about the ride value - speed's not really my thing, especially in such a small car, next to H2's and huge SUV's - i'm just curious about the performance people can pull out of the A series engines

I have a 59 Bugeye with a 2.3L Chevy Vega motor and a Chevy 4spd tranny. I run the stock Sprite rear. My car weighs in at 1275 lbs. The block is aluminum and the head is cast iron. It is .20 over, ported and polished with a mild cam and a Weber 2 barrel on a stock manifold. The HP is guessed to be around 150 but probably more like 125+. It is so fast from light to light that it feels like my skin is coming off sometimes. I would project blistering 1/8 mile times and probably a 15 second quarter tops. I am now trying to figure out how to stop it. I would prefer that it would be stock with a 1275 upgrade but it was heavily modified for the Chevy drivetrain when I got it so I just continued with it.

Isnt the speed all relative?
Ride in a nice caddy and 80 seems like 40. 60 in my midget and i feel like just about to leave the road and climb into the Blue sky. My heart is in my throat whenever i throw it into a sharp corner at 50. It keeps up well in traffice , if you DRIVE IT! It is kinda wimpy at anything below 2500 rpm. But Boy What A Ride!!

Yes!

I know my daughter (age 4) constantly reminds me to slow down while in my Sprite or TR4... even though we're usually going fairly slow and getting passed by everyone else. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
